Notre Dame could still go to BCS bowl game if they win out
If two-loss Notre Dame wins out, they will be in a BCS bowl, and the Rose Bowl executive director isn't even bothering to pretend that it's for any reason other than money and TV ratings.
I think most people agree that Notre Dame has no business being in a BCS bowl game this year, but guess? They may still be.

Gator Bowl president Rick Catlett would love to have a Fighting Irish team that finishes 10-2, but can't imagine it happening.

"I can tell you that four BCS bowl directors are hoping they finish 10-2 and in the top 14 in the BCS poll," Catlett said.

That's because Notre Dame, with its tradition of eight national championships, seven Heisman Trophy winners and a national fan base, brings TV ratings and strong ticket sales.

"Everyone involved in the bowl business is aware of Notre Dame, aware of their fan base, aware of the economic impact it would have on their bowl," Rose Bowl executive director Mitch Dorger said.

This is just another reminder that life isn't fair, kids. But at least if Notre Dame makes a BCS bowl game, they'll lose by 35 points. And Charlie Weis will still be fat.

Just root for Pitt next weekend then. Another loss and it's a moot point

Reality hurts.  Sports is money driven.  Yankees and others buy championships and ND brings the bucks wherever they go.

Or just Navy today...it's 14-0 Navy in the 2nd.

You beat me to it.  Right now they're having trouble in the first half against Navy, and next week they're at Pitt who is a much better team than Navy.

I'm hoping Pitt wins big at home next weekend because the crap he'll have to take from Mark May might cause Lou's head to explode.

Exactly! If they lose to navy today, it's bye-bye BCS for ND....

Hopefully Navy takes care of the problem today, and if not, then *shudders* Pitt should.

Of course Iowa losing today means that the Rose Bowl is all but assured to get Big 10 vs. Pac-10 like they like.

How about Notre Dame to the Fiesta Bowl to take on (and get destroyed by) TCU

That'd be fun (or Boise State).  That'd be the ultimate bucking of tradition.  Now I found myself rooting for Notre Dame to win out for that scenario.

GO PITT! I will definitely be rooting for them.

I always see the silver lining...plus seeing Boise or TCU beat Notre Dame would be pretty sweet.

well, I guess it really doesn't matter now. Pitt to hand ND back-to-back losses next weekend

Notre Dame now has 4 Losses and will STILL probably play in a prominent Bowl game this season!  This is what is WRONG with the NCAA and it's Bowl Selection Committee!

Well if you consider the Gator Bowl a prominent bowl then yes they will.

Don't worry, they still have 3 more games, all of which they have the potential to lose.  The more they lose, the lousier bowl they'll play in.

My point is that they shouldn't be playing in ANY Bowl game! But, obviously they will because they are Notre Dame- it's a travesty!

Well to be fair, more than half of all D-1 teams get to go to a bowl. All you have to do is squeak out 6 wins and you get to go bowling.

Hey Vin, for the record, they only have 3 losses (right now).  I know you're already handing Pitt the win next week, but the Irish haven't had the chance to get embarrassed by the Panthers just yet.

Sorry thought today was their 4th loss- my bad!   But still, I don't feel that they are deserving of ANY bowl game!

I find it funny that you can even COMPARE Notre Dame to USC  one loss less or not!  But to answer your question, right now I DON'T think that USC deserves to play in a bowl game after embarrassing themselves last week! With that said though, USC has beaten some RANKED teams this season (Ohio State and California)  both games on the road! I do believe that Notre Dame was also ranked when the Trojans beat them in South Bend as well!  Correct me if I'm wrong, but has Notre Dame even beaten a Ranked opponent this season and if so, did they do it on the road (which is MUCH harder to do)??

I am a Notre Dame fan and I think they should not make a bowl. They have a very exciting offense but the defense sucks. If they had any kind of Defense they might be undefeated as of now. By By Charlie!!!

Yo Vin USC choked this year also.

Yes they did, but you don't hear me bragging about my team either as "some" Irish fans have!  BTW, USC BEAT Notre Dame in South Bend if my memory serves me correctly!

Like Iowa, Notre Dame has barely beaten several average teams.  They should be thrilled to only have 3 losses.  Navy dominated that game today.

If they got embarrassed like that by Navy, I see no way they have any chance to beat Pitt.

It's over for ND. And I think Weis should get the axe. Willingham was axed for less, IMO. I mean, losing to Navy twice after having never lost to Navy in like 50 years? Come on already.

All true, but doesn't that make Weis even worse? I mean, if he has better players than Willingham then he should win more, correct? To me, that just makes it even worse because he's losing with better players to teams that Willingham didn't lose to.

I mean, come on. It's Navy and Weis has lost twice to them now, with "better" players. That's a disgrace.

I've used up all of my respect for the day but I'll give you a  for that comment!  It's very true!  If Weis has had better recruiting classes- he SHOULD be winning- but alas he is NOT!

Yeah, you make good points. But I'll counter with a few of my own. First, yes any coach is the coach and the players are the players. But we all know, no matter what, the coach is the one who loses their job when the players don't execute. Fair or not, that is how it goes.

Second, it is the job of the coach to make sure the players are prepared to play and are able to execute. Is it Charlie's fault that the kicker misses a kick? Well, strictly speaking no. But did Charlie select that kicker? Did Charlie send him on the field? Is it because of a poor play call or two that they ended up in a kicking situation? If a better play was called on 3rd might they not have ened up in 4th and had to go out and attempt a kick?

I'll say that IMO that no matter how poorly you execute, or how badly the plays are called, the players and coaches of ND should be so far superior to the Navy's of the world that they still win the game. If that isn't the case, then things need to change for the Irish.

I respect your opinions- Hell I don't even pay much attention to the Irish during the season (unless they are playing the Trojans). With that said though, the Irish are in the National spotlight every year, just as the Trojans are. 3 loss (or worse) seasons are NOT acceptable to the Irish fans or alumni OR the National Media either! And bowl losses are COMPLETELY unacceptable as well (once again, this is also true at USC)! Weis, in MANY people's opinions, has NOT lived up to his own "hype"- nor has he brought the Irish back to winning traditions either.... It's unfortunate for him (because his is a decent Coach), but the NCAA lives on the theory of "What have you done for me lately?" And truthfully- he's done NOTHING!

They should've lost to Washington. His knee was down on the two point conversion, and the game tying field goal should have been game winning.

College football is the only sport where it is money and prestige instead of the actual games that determines its' postseason.  It's just sad.

I think keeping current talent and his bloated contract are all that is keeping Weis in his job. Right now Swarbrick is changing his phone number while trustees, alumnae,  and reporters hound him.

Even in a down year, ND's talent should be enough to beat Navy. There is no excuse good enough for losing to a service academy. I'd love to see a graph comparing ND's coaching staff size, salaries, recruiting budget, recruiting man-hours, and size and speed of the players. Notre Dame is supposed to be superior to Navy in every way and they still lost. How does an inferior program still win games? More motivation. Fewer mistakes. Smarter decisions. Better game plan. In short; better coaching. Weis must go.

"Yeah firing Weis makes sense on so many levels."

The only level that matters now is wins and losses. You want to keep him because players might be lost . I want to see him fired because games are being lost.

The only reason to keep him is a lack of a realistic replacement. I would rather see him ride out his contract than go through another protracted, embarrassing, and public search for a replacement. If they have an experienced candidate that they know (unlike Urban Meyer) wants to be at Notre Dame, then they should let Weis go. Until then, he can try and save his job.

All the great recruits he's brought in haven't helped him beat Navy. All the top 25 classes he has brought in couldn't slow down Navy. I don't think losing to Navy is going to do great things for next year's class. The only positive is that Weis can promise new recruits more playing time because the four star guy playing right now can't wrap-up the fullback from Navy.
