What looked like a lopsided win quickly turned into a nail-biter for the Edmonton Oilers. Patrick O'Sullivan scored the shootout winner as the Oilers blew a four-goal lead before salvaging a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.
Ales Hemsky had a pair of goals, Dustin Penner had a goal and three assists and J.F. Jacques, and Shawn Horcoff also scored as Edmonton snapped a three-game losing skid. Horcoff had a season-best three point game on his return to the first line after only two points in his previous 12 games.
Detroit made it a one-goal game just over a minute later when Todd Bertuzzi scored his second of the season. The Red Wings completed the comeback with their fourth consecutive goal as Patrick Eaves fought for the puck on a rush in front of the Edmonton net and scored his first of the season to make it 5-5. Detroit outshot Edmonton 20-6 in the third period.
Edmonton snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 7-5-1 and moves into a tie with Calgary for eighth spot in the Western Conference, while Detroit dropped to 4-4-3 with its fourth loss in five games.
Edmonton embarks on a short two-game road trip, starting Saturday, October 31 in Boston.
