One Man's Ideas to Fix IndyCar
READ MORE:
The debacle at Richmond last Saturday laid obvious what must observers already suspected, that the IndyCar Series on track product is broken. With a new formula not occurring until 2012 at the earliest, action needs to be taken now while IndyCar have some sort of a fanbase, especially since on track excitement is really all IndyCar has to compete with NASCAR.

David Malsher of RACER has some ideas that could be implented now, or 2010 at the latest, to help fix the problem now. His ideas include random pit box allocation, mandatory marble clean-up, a harder tire compound, and some chassis tinkering starting next year.

Anyone else have any ideas to fix this, and quickly?

I think his idea of cleaning off the track during full-course cautions is a relatively easy and common sense fix for the short term.  Harder tires is a decent idea, although it could result in more track position racing in that drivers will skip out on changing tires at the end of the race in order to come in front.

WOW!!! Great find Eric, this guy obviously is almost as pi$$ed as you are at the racing we (some of us) get to see every week.  I was looking forward to the Watkins Glen race, I enjoy the road courses in IRL more than the ovals.  I sincerely hope that it IS a race.
Now, his ideas, I really like! All of them make sense, and have some forethought, obviously.  I especially like the idea of the random pits and the track cleaning.  I truly hope the Powers That Be listen to him and implement his suggestions.
Gee, just thinking about those immediate changes has me excited about Indy again!

even though i missed the Richmond race it sounds as if i didn't miss much, sad to read a report like this. The quickest and cheapest fix would be a harder tire compound, gets rid of the marbles and hopefully the drivers would be willing and able to race. How long can Indy and Long Beach carry a series for an entire year? How many of the fans who paid hard earned dollars to watch this disaster will be back next year? As the author of the article states the time to fix the racing is NOW....tomorrow may be too late to save open wheel racing in the US........

Agree whole heartedly TJ.  Much as many wouldn't want to admit it, IRL does compete with Indy for fans/viewers.  I love all kinds of racing, not JUST NASCAR and I enjoy IRL races, but I don't enjoy "high speed parades" so whatever they need to do to "fix" it, I hope they do it NOW!

Seems like they've started the process. Not big changes, but a start. We'll see what happens at Kentucky. http://www.openwheelworld.net/pages/news.php?id=7419&lg=us&r

Kentucky sounds great.  The road courses aren't a problem, I think they are exciting enough, but the ovals DO need help.  Kudos to the powers that be for recognizing it and taking action.  Can hardly wait for August 1st, now!
