Orioles say "No Thanks" to Cal Ripken Jr.
4/17/10 in MLB
So it seems Cal Ripken recently had a sit down with Baltimore Orioles GM Andy MacPhail and inquired about rejoining the struggling organization in a teaching capacity for the younger players. MacPhail and Ripken agreed that the relationship would benefit both parties, with Ripken providing MacPhail some of his baseball knowledge while MacPhail would help Ripken learn the administrative side of the job. The only problem was that Orioles owner, Peter Angelos, nixed the idea, telling multiple sources that "he did not want Ripken to receive credit once the team returned to prominence".
When your team has had 12 straight losing seasons and the franchise's greatest legend wants to help out, I suggest you take the offer. From the sound of it, Ripken wasnt interested in being a co-general manager for the club. All Ripken wanted as the chance to work with the Orioles younger players and help them hone there craft. I dont see where the problem lies in that. Perhaps this is yet another reason why the Orioles are annually one of the worse teams in baseball
