Pac-10 Commissioner Says Conference Will Walk Away From BCS If Plus-1 System Is Adopted
READ MORE:
Maybe talk of the 4 team playoff system is premature. Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen informed Matt Hayes of Sporting News that he'd withdraw the conference from the BCS if such a system was adopted.

That could just be hard talk, but that also contradicts early statements that just about everyone was on board of a small playoff.

"Our presidents have no interest whatsoever in a plus-one model -- none," Hansen says. "It's a little annoying that my colleagues continue to float this idea as though it has merit. If they continue to push it, and try to push us into a corner ... "

Will the Pac-10 walk away from the BCS?

"Yes, no question."

I know a lot of your reactions will be -- "So what, who needs the Pac 10." The reality is that nothing will happen without the Pac-10 approval, and the Big 10 presidents are also likely to oppose the plan.

That would be stupid of them. Even if they are against it, they will lose sooo much money!

Tom Hanson is a old, senile idiot who badly needs to retire.  Pac-10 fans go into a tailspin whenever he opens his mouth.

I believe he's the reason behind the conference not wanting to expand, not the school presidents.  Why turn away money and ratings?  I've never been able to figure that out.

I'm so back and forth on the playoff issue I shouldn't comment again until I make up my mind.

But what I do think is that the Pac-10 needs a commissioner more marketing focused. They need some more creative endeavors, something new. Why isn't there a Pac-10 - Big East cross country basketball contest. If he's so against the playoff system, how about getting the conference some better bowl games. Hell, how about a Pac-10 Channel. It's an outstanding sports conference that doesn't get any pub. You can sit around and blame it on the "East Coast Bias" or you can try and do something about it.

Can someone please explain to me why the Pac-10 would pull out of the BCS simply because of a small playoff system? I honestly have no idea why this could possibly be a bad thing for the Pac-10.

I'm in total agreement with you, Jason.  My buddy, Adam, and I sit around our tailgates thinking what an a** he is.   A new marketing strategy is of utmost importance to me.  Football, basketball, whatever.  The conference needs it.

There's still some old school "hangers on" that want the old Big Ten/Pac-10 matchup in the Rose Bowl.  Hansen is of that mindset.  But Tommy buddy, that ship has sailed.

Maybe the east coast bias has somewhat to do with Hansen, but I'll still b**ch and moan about that regardless of him.

Considering they have the leading sports marketing institute in the country (by a considerable margin) located in their own conference, it seems silly they haven't taken the lead in this department.

The Plus 1 system is good for the years when a legitimate 3rd team gets left out, it's bad the years when the top 2 actually play each other (it has happened more than once you know). All it is, is a reactive fix to the years when there was a problem. It WILL create a problem the next time the obvious top 2 play each other and than the winner is supposed to play another team.

I'm against it for that reason, it's not really fixing the problem just another sort of kinda fix that the BCS does, but I have a feeling this isn't why he's threatening to pull out the Pac Ten.

Either go full playoff or don't, they need to stop messing around in the middle somewhere.

These conferences that are opposed of the playoff system are afraid. They are afraid of not being Strong enough to compete in a playoff system, They want to keep it as it is (the good ole boy system). In the current System teams are ranked on a popularity scale, and far to often are placed to high in the preseason polls, which in turn helps them get into BCS games at the end of the year

Collage Football needs a playoff system. Is the Plus one system right? Who Knows, but it is a start. A playoff system is the only true way to determine a clear cut National Champion. I say if the PAC 10 Is not on board there CHICKEN, oh yes I am calling you out PAC 10 you yellow bellied wimps.

Here is another opinion, if they are gonna do a plus-1 system, I believe is would make it even less fair for the 2 teams in the BCS championship game because if they are the 2 best teams they shouldn't meet until the Plus-1 game. So if they are going do that playoff formant, they mine as well seed the top 4 teams in 2 games, 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 then sort it out, instead of doing 1 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 4.
