Phil Cuzzie feels terrible about bad call against Twins, should be suspended
Phil Cuzzi needs to take some time off after this terrible call
36
Every umpire makes bad calls. We saw that in game 1 of the ALDS between the Angels and Red Sox, when CB Bucknor butchered two calls at 1st base, resulting in several extra runs for the Angels. But last night's failure by Phil Cuzzi was equally unacceptable, especially considering the fact that it happened in extra innings of a pivotal game in the series.

He should definitely be suspended. He was in position to make the call, and demonstrated an obvious inability to do so. If an umpire can't do his job, they need to fond someone who can. Period.

I think he needs some glasses.

Especially on a play like this, where there was no continuation to the play. It was either a foul ball or a ground rule double, so it's not like the umpires had to worry about the players "playing through" and completing the play. It was very cut-and-dry, and had a profound impact on the game.

You really don't want replays in baseball because you would give more power to the leagues and refs. Right now baseball is the last major sport where the players dictate the outcome of games for the most part, if it's an out it's an out or if it's a home run it's a home run. Us as fans will be able to tolerate a bad call or two by umps, blame it on the light or something. But put in replays where the umps have to go under a sheet or talk to upstairs, where they can blame obvious calls on the camera angle they have, or have time to make up a rule such as the "Tuck Rule" you will have the same thing that goes on in football and basketball going on where you can be able to predict a game as it goes on. They will be able to give players reputations, use personal feelings against teams and players and then you will start seeing, other than the Yankees and the Red Sox, but the same big market teams in the playoffs and championships every year, or Lord forbid the most good and whoesome acting teams in the big games, such as the Spurs and Utah. Please no replay in baseball. It's a long enough game anyway whithout checking replay to screw a player over because he doesn't play for a big market team and nobody knows who he really is anyway .

This pisses me off because it nearly robs me of my World Series prediction and now I'll look stupid (almost as stupid as these umpires). >__<.

It's too bad, because that was a really good game.  I agree that he should be suspended and my early reservations about instant replay in baseball have been answered.  I'm okay with expanding it to fair/foul calls.  They could have fixed it in 30 seconds.

Especially if it could possibly hurt the Yankees.

But if not, @#$% it.

To be 100% honest, I am in favor of it, and I think all plays of fair or foul should be reviewable as well as plays at the plate.  Really, all bases, but at least at the plate.

I am not in favor of this one agency or whatever they are to control all the angles and what they and we see.  It should be held at each ballpark.  And we should have access to the very same footage.  None of this "maybe they can see something we don't" BS.

Exactly! It's only an abomination when the calls go for a team he does not like, especially  the Yankees.    Someone is full of it.

As a Yankees fan, I was HAPPY he missed the call...but as a BASEBALL fan, I think that replay COULD be used in a situation like this.

How do you know what kind of impact that play had on the game? Are you a psychic?  He still could have been stranded at second.  Plus, he still ended up in scoring position with none out.  The Twins blew that game by themselves.  They still had THREE opportunities to score in that inning after that call.

These guys must have gone to the Don Denkinger school for umpires...yikes.!

Then why did I also write about the Tigers getting screwed? Oh yeah... because it happened, and I wrote about it. Like I do any time a bad call ruins the integrity of the game. Nice try, though.

The next batter hit a single. If Mauer was on second, he might have scored on that hit. Instead, he was only able to advance to second. I'm not saying it was guaranteed to make a difference, but you can't even remotely make the case that it didn't have an effect on the game. It did. Period. I'm not saying the Twins would have won, and I believe they blew the game long before that, when Joe Nathan blew the save. But the umpire is paid to do his job, and he failed miserably on a play where he had no excuse whatsoever.

This call is so bad, because it's fair by TWO accounts:

1) It hit the fielder's glove while he was standing in fair territory
2) The ball actually landed in fair territory

I'm not sure how he missed both of these things.
It also cost the Twins the game. They would have scored at least one run, and assuming they score no more, Texiera's bomb only ties the game instead of winning it.

I really don't like replay for baseball, BUT, if the umps are going to miss obvious calls like this then something has to be done.

It was a sucky call, period. It cost the Twins the game. But there should not be instant replay in the game. We have enough of that stuff in every single sport now.

Oh yeah, I forgot this.......the umps are human, but when an ump misses a call as badly as this guy, the league should suspend the dude until the find out if his eyes have been checked recently. If they have, then suspend him again until next spring.

No one is whining... just stating facts. The ball was foul. The ump blew it. Or are you going to deny it?

The game was yesterday, and no one i crying. Take a chill pill, bro. Just pointing it out and letting people discuss it. That's kinda what we do around here.

I agree.. that umpire was either Frickin Blind or on the take.. I'm betting the latter of the two ...:( we got robbed on that call..

I agree.. especially when there's the chance of an umpire not seeing with his own two eyes that ball was fair for Mauer ...what a fixed call that was...

people cant seem to get past a call.  why?  does that really give the twins an excuse for loading the bases with nobody out and not scoring a run?  bad calls happen you dont dwell on it. the twins and their fans should worry why the team has been out scored 49-15 in the 7th inning or later in playoff games.

I don't agree with instant replay in baseball. The games already last 3 hours. Stopping every play that is questionable would only make the games longer and longer. They have never had it before and it is never needed.

In baseball playoffs the best usally ends up winning the series. I know you could say it changes momentum all that jazz but the yanks still had to beat them 3 games out of 5.

What was mostly stunning about last night's Yankees/Angels game was when umps made a correct call!

Yeah,  Umps do make Good calls when they have a Good View and the Right angle to see what call to make...in Cuzzi's Case... he did NOT make the right call..in any case... Twins are out of the playoffs so I haven't been watching nearly as much of the ALCS or the NLCS....Good Luck to all playing...
