It has to have been the worst year of Phil Mickelson's life. First, his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, and Phil took time off to be with her as they analyzed her options. Then, just when it seemed they had steadied and dealt with Amy's illness, his mother was diagnosed with the same disease.
Phil has been on and off the golf course as he deals with the health issues of the women in his life, most notably on the course at Bethpage where he seemed to be poised for a win he could dedicate to his wife. It was not to be, however, when Lucas Glover outshot him by two, and Phil took some additional time away from the links.
Now he is back, prepared to compete this weekend at the Bridgestone Invitational, not a Major, but still a chance to shine before the PGA Championship. He'll have to contend with Tiger, of course, and Vijay Singh, who has yet to win a tournament this year.
This year has been a rough one for many on the PGA tour, there have been illnesses, deaths and freak accidents, but there will be an auction this weekend as part of the fesitivities and Chris Smith, whose wife was killed in an automobile accident earlier this year, will benefit from the love of his fellow competitors.
The golfing community is a clse knit one and they look after their own, comrades and friends.....at least until it comes time to sept up to the tee box.
