Pistons agreed to deals with Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva
The Pistons are getting ready to be contenders again, agreeing to deals with Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon

The Pistons took a big step towards being a competitive team again by agreeing to deals with former Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva and former Bulls guard Ben Gordon.

Will that be enough to make them a legitimate contender with the Magic, Cavaliers and Celtics in the Eastern Conference?

i like the addition of Gordon...he is speedy and can hit the big shot when he needs to...i see them contending this next season but i do think they need to add or subtract a few more players before i say they are the favorites

So I'm guessing that Rip Hamilton is soon on his way out of Detroit. No way that he'll play with guys who take as many shots away from him as Gordon and Villanueva are going to do.

I'm betting it won't be very long before reports are that Rip Hamilton is griping about having to play with these guys. I mean, I don't think Rip liked playing with AI very much, how much worse is he going to hate playing with these guys who both take a lot of shots?

I like this move for the Pistons as they get younger at the guard and forward position.  I agree with Cory too, this makes Rip Hamilton expendable and maybe Joe Dumars can find a trade partner who has a low post presence they are trying to get rid of

Dumars should now move Hamilton and Prince for expiring contracts and try to get Bosh to go with these two.  This team had bigger problems than just A.I., and pretending that he was their only problem is going to hurt them in the long run.

I didn't know being a contender involved jacking up a ton of shots and playing little defense.

Yeah trade em both to the Celtics!!! No one would score over 100 points on em with Garnett coming back. That ridiculous trade rumor of Rondo and Allen for Rip and Prince makes a little more sense now.... I'd love to see that. Not that it's gonna happen, but no one could score on the Celtics and the Pistons would be interesting to watch. But overall that is trade is a phony one and it'd hurt the Pistons more than help most likely

With Charlie Villanueva off the board, the Cavaliers are persuing Rasheed Wallace. I like Sheed. I think he'll help LeBron and Shaq alot. Having said that they should let Varejao go. Varejao is asking between 5 to 10 million bones(dollars), and the Cavs can't afford it.

ESPN is also reporting that the Cavs are making a serious run at Trevor Ariza as well.  Apparently the Lakers dont want to pay him what he is asking for either.  Guess that means they would rather keep Odom around

That's going to be a big mistake by the Lakers.  The Cavs can only offer $5.6 million, there is no reason that the Lakers, of all teams, can't afford to pay him $7 million.

As for the Cavs.. Nothing they do will make the Shaq trade worth it.  It was completely counterproductive.  However, potentially signing Ariza does solve many of the Cavs biggest issues.  It gives them an athletic defender that they need (its just not logical to have your best player play tough defense all game), and he can nail open threes.  Plus, he'd be fun as heck to watch in the open floor with LeBron.

i hope for gods sake that the Pistons do not trade Rip or Prince...they are what makes the offense go...at least Rip does...i cannot wait to see Rasheed outta Detriot..he was great the first 2 years but after that he became a headache and as far as A.I. goes...what a bust that was...i know it was made to free up cap space but why him?he made my team worse not better....but he soon will be outta D-town as well....iand i hope the Pistons aren't finished signing some people....they do have other gaps to fill

Ben Gordon is a fine player. I know nothing about Villanueva, i don't think i have ever watched a Raptors game, and the last time i saw a Bucks game was.......
Anyway, Dumars can't do worse than the Billups mess. If it improves the Pistons, then i am all for it. What about a coach.? Will the style of the coach mesh with the players.?

The Pistons have officially moved to #2 (behind San Antonio) on my "Best Offseason so far" list.
