In December the Big Ten Conference announced plans to expand their conference. It was expected that two new teams would be added to the conference and the process was expected to take 12-18 months.
It seems that the Big Ten has been moving quickly to find new teams, because Ben Maller of the Fox Sports Radio Network is reporting that the University of Pittsburgh will be announced as the newest member of the Big Ten. Pitt will be the 12th team in the conference and the move is expected to be made official as soon as Thursday.
According to the report:
Some athletes were informed of the move over the weekend, a little birdie tells me. This move sets up the natural rivalry with Penn State who joined the conference in 1990. It also gives the Big 10 another east coast presence.
It is also believed that the Missouri Tigers, who are currently in the Big XII, are also considering making the move.
