Pittsburgh Pirates create candlelight memorial for Nate McLouth after he was traded to the Braves
The Pirates are taking the Nate McLouth trade pretty hard. They created a candlelight memorial in McLouth's honor.
Think the Pirates are upset about the Nate McLouth trade? Just read this:

"On Thursday, at the clubhouse table where McLouth used to play cards with relievers Sean Burnett and Jesse Chavez, a candle bearing McLouth's uniform No. 13 was lit, along with a photo of him in uniform."

I know the Pirates are trying to trade their better players for younger talant.  And that part of deals like this make sense to me.  The Pirates have to build their franchise that way; they will never be able to build with high priced free agents.  But when do the pirates draw the line?  Do small market team's decision makers really think they can build championship teams?  It is almost impossible with the way the MLB is configured.  Teams like the Yankees and Red Sox can go buy championships with high priced free agents and no salary-cap.  I find baseball boring not because of the pace of the game but instead because I go into the beginning of every season never expecting anything from the Pirates.  They are a glorified farm team for the large markets and I am sick and tired of it.

Where's #2?  If you are going to go to the extent of numbering your points, should you not have more than one?

Not only have several notable Braves players been Pirates before, but the Braves began their spectacular run of 14 straight division titles by also defeating the Pirates in the 91 and 92 NLCS. After Sid Bream's slide dashed their hopes in 92, Barry Bonds departed for the big bucks in San Francisco and the Pirates have never dreamed of the postseason since. It is, frankly, a sad situation and bad for baseball in general.
But since the Rockies and Rays appeared in the last two World Series, and the Twins have been competitive all decade, there is proof that smaller-market teams can compete. The problem is that, lacking the financial resources to hold on to their young stars, these teams may make it to the top one year but can't sustain a run like the Yankees, Red Sox, Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, etc. can. But in truth, no team can keep a nucleus together forever anymore. Even the Braves eventually had to let Maddux go, and this year couldn't even keep Smoltz and Glavine in the twilight of their careers.

Yeah and the Pirates can't even keep players in the primes of their careers!

I know small market teams can have success in the MLB.  But it is just a lot harder.  Small Market teams have to lock up young talant with long term contracts and hope it pans out in the future.  Large Market teams can be more flexible; they can go after certian free-agents to complete the puzzle that is their team.  Baseball needs a salary cap alredy!!

After returning to this post I realized much of my comment was redundant to yours. So I voted both of your comments smart! But we could start a list here:

Things That Will Never Happen, Thanks to the MLBPA:
  • salary cap
  • lifetime ban for one violation of the drug policy
  • ?...
The list can go on... maybe it'd be worth its own post...
