Rangers Beat Capitals in Triple Overtime, Take 2-1 Series Lead
5/3/12 in NHL
This game started at 7:40 PM ET. The Rangers scored the first goal of the game in the second period in game 3 at the Verizon Center in our Nation's Capital. The Capitals answered before the end of the frame. Both teams had chances in the 3rd period, but both goalies stood tall and we went to yet another overtime in this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs. Ho hum, it went to OT, but we wouldn't be talking about this game if it just went one overtime. Oh no, this one turned into a marathon. Brad Richards made a beautiful play to set up from behind the Caps' goal near the end of the third overtime, and Marian Gaborik stood right in front of rookie goalie Braden Holtby and shuffled the puck 5-hole on him with less than 5 minutes remaining in the third overtime. You heard me, it was close to going to a 4th OT. When Gaborik finally scored the third and final goal of this game, the clock read 12:14 AM ET.
The Rangers now take a 2-1 series lead, and both teams will be happy to know that game 4 is on Saturday and NOT Friday night after playing two whole games tonight.
