Ray Evernham seeks to sever ties with Richard Petty Motorsports

by JrCanuckFan JrCanuckFan | 11/22/0911 Comment Comments »
In the '90's Ray Evernham and Jeff Gordon were unstoppable, unbeatable, phenomenal.  and simply unbelievable.  They were the Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus of the '90's.  Together they won 47 races and three championships.

Evernham left Hendrick Motorsports at the end of 1999 to form his own race team, something he'd always dreamed of doing. He formed an arrangement with Dodge and with drivers such as Kasey Kahne, Casey Atwood, Bill Elliott, Elliott Sadler and Jeremy Mayfield he found success.  He even started developing drivers, such as Erin Crocker.  In 2006, Mayfield, always one of the biggest yakkers in the garage, accused Evernham of deserting the team so he could spend time with Erin Crocker.  The result of the accusation was the firing of Jeremy Mayfield and the effective end of his career.

The economy eventually led Evernham to join forces with George Gillett, but that partnership never seemed to be all that Evernham wanted.  And further economical woes led to another merger, between Gillett-Evernham Racing and Petty Motorsports, forming Richard Petty Motorsports.

Although Ray Evernham has a minority ownership in Richard Petty Motorsports, he has nothing to do with the day to day operation of the company, and in fact, is more restricted on what he can and can't do in racing.

He and Erin were married earlier this year in Las Vegas and Ray started working with ESPN, improving their broadcast immensely.  He says he hopes to continue his broadcast efforts there along with his weekly guest shots on SIRIUS Satellite radios NASCAR Channel 128.  But it obviously isn't enough.

Ray is seeking to sever all ties with Richard Petty Motorsports, and the "non competition clause".  It couldn't be better for our sport, and I hope, beyond hope, he is successful in his quest.

NASCAR would be a better sport with Ray Evernham back in the garage.

There have been a few times in some interiews over the last year or so that he's talked about becoming a crew chief again.  It would be awesome to see him back, but I think right now his focus is more on broadcasting and the track he owns... or co-owns and trying to bring it back from the almost grave.

I do not know if it would work the second time around, at least right off the bat. I also dont see Rick giving Ray equal status as Chad. I think that the only way you would get Ray back. If it did work out it could either be the best one two punch in Nascar or the biggest fight in Nascar, because Chad and Ray our both big primadonnas.

That would also free of Steve latart for Dale who need someone that is good and forceful to gather in his primadoona ways.

No one has said that he would return to HMS, honestly.  He just wants to get out of his RPM situation.  He is an incredible crew chief and I'm sure there would be every team in the garage fighting for the rights to put him on their pit box.  I think Jeff and Steve are quite comfortable with each other and I'm not sure the two would want to "match up" again.

Does this mean Erin Crocker is somewhere in the garage too?

#6 | 118 days ago

only reason he wants outs is cause he can not be or is not the one in the spot light  he thinks he is as good as richard pretty and he not  yes he was a good crew chief with jeff  but jeff and steve are good together their is nothing wrong with them.
and futher he like to be in the spot light more so doing his tv and trying to bring back his track he owns is what he wants PLUS  if he gets out of his contract with petty its going to cost him alot of money and it do him good to have to pay for backing out and not honoring his word  and contract !!!

Bring Ray back to Hendrick for Jeff

Being an NASCAR fan since the split with Hellman and Penske in Indy, as well as before that I become accustom to a certain brand of racing in NASCAR. The brand you would see long before it presentations on Nation television. I think there growth in nation television came with to much of a cost not only to the fans, but to the race tracks and drivers and owners as well. Bill France is nothing more then another mob boss enforcing what “he” and he alone thinks is good for the fans. The elimination of bumping and bump drafts and rubbing and allowing blocks, because if a driver bump them out of the way they will be fined. Kyle Busch could not run in the old NASCAR the way he wine and cries about be put into the wall by Stewart a couple of weeks back would not have even been listen to in the old days. As a matter of fact, he would be called just that a cry baby. In the last 5 years I seen Jeff Gordan go from the driver he was taught to be by Dale Sr. to a wimp. Although I seen some spark in him this year. Not enough but some. This chase they call a chase, is it right that a driver who wins a race could possible be left out of winning a championship? This is just wrong, and these allowing driver to line up by there point because of rain, what a joke. This only ensures that the top driver stay the top driver. Or stopping races because of rain after half the race is run. If that is the case then we as fan should receive half or money back from our tickets. Races should not be discontinued until at least three fourths of the race is completed. Then as a fan you can say you got your money worth. I have some simple but unique way to stop all this and make the races, each and everyone more drama filled and exciting. I would be rest interested in the FANS, the one who pay for those tickets that make those purses and pay those wages for the drivers, owners and track owners. That’s makes it possible for all those television ads. Here are the ideals I have to place before you.

(1) No more lining up by points on rain outs. How you finished in the last race is how you will start in a rain out race. What a unique ideal, because not only do you have to run a race to win, you have to run it incase of rain for your starting position in the next race. How interesting is this? Do you really race hard and take chances? Yes because not only this race, but maybe the next one as well rest on each and every race. This would force those drivers and crews to fix those cars and get them back on the track at race speeds incase of wrecks which would keep them from starting in the back.
(2) Restrictor place are gone, this to stop some of the wreck you see now days in the Daytona style tracks. Less face it these guys became drivers because they not only love the excitement of racing but for the risk of it as well. Yes you will still see some wrecks, but not mulity car wreck, and yes will some of those wreck be bad one, you bet. But the chance of those wreck reduce because the cars will not all be bunched up.
(3) Allow the owners and crews build there cars as they see fit as long as it fits within the car shape and design, and does not remove any of the safety equipment already established.
(4) Not more being fined for bump drafting, or rubbing or moving slower cars out of the way when they try to block you from passing them. Has it been that long that we all forgot how Dale Sr. Died? Blocking, to try to get a one, two three finish at Daytona. He knew what he was doing, and done it for years. THAT RACING FOLKS. Driver caught blocking more then one lap will receive a drive through in the pits. This would stop the blocking. Because you want to block to keep that position even though you’re slower then the car behind you, you will lose it with a drive through.
(5) To make the so-called chase you will need at least 3302 point within the first 26 races. If you win a race, one race you our in the chase.
(6) Winner of a race receive (100) one hundred more point then the second place driver, the second place driver receive fifty point more then the third place driver and the third place driver receives twenty five point more then the forth place driver. This will make the top three driver, drive like champions at the end of the race.
(7) Each lap led in the race receives and additional five points for those laps, not just a five point bonus and ten point bonus. But for ever lap lead you receive five bonus points. Simple if you lead (80) eighty laps you receive (400) four hundred points. This will make drivers think about letting even a team mate in front to lead a lap as has been happening the last few years.
(8) Chase driver are set at the beginning of the (27) twenty seventh race. They will be give no more then a (300) three hundred point advantage over the rest of the field drivers. This allows for a second tier of chase drivers, those how just missed the chase. Because if a driver makes it into the chase and drivers 13 thought 17 can over take them then there is a reward. That reward being whatever points that driver (not car or owner) will be allowed to begin the next season with. Example, maybe one driver or two driver will be allow to have a head start on the rest of the driver the following season. What a concept. This would create a lot of racing and excitement and drama.
Well reader and NASCAR fans what do you think?

New point awards
1. 280  2. 180  3. 130  4. 125  5. 120  6. 115  7. 110  8. 105  9. 100
10.95 11.92  12.89  13.86  14.83  15.80 16.77  17.74  18.71
19.69  20.67  21. 65  22. 63  23. 61  24.59  25.57  26.55  27.53
28.50  29.49  30.48  31.47  32.46  33.45  34.44 35.43  36.42  37.41  38.40
39.30  40.25  41.20  42.15

Now would this not make for exciting racing, I think so when each driver and crew knows that you can gain a spot with just finishing two cars ahead of the driver in front of you you take his spot, and if you finish toward the back, you not a good driver to begin with and it time to improve or get out of the racing business…..

She's also an announcer, working with Speed TV on the lesser series - we saw her all summer long in the Summer Shootout series.  And she isn't really good at it.

I'd love to see Ray back in the garage!  I also listen to Ray on SIRIUS NASCAR radio 128.
