Rays fans are still bitter about losing the 2008 World Series to the Phillies
Remember when Rays fans were few and far between, and you just felt bad for them? They're still rare, but man are they obnoxious.
22
Last year, the Phillies won the World Series pretty convincingly, proving that the Tampa Bay Rays were completely overmatched, in a lopsided 4 games to 1 victory.

A year later, at least one Rays fan is still whining about it, and speculating on how the Phillies will "cheat" their way to victory this year.

Remember only a few short years ago, when Rays fans (all 6 of them) were the kind of people you'd just feel bad for, and you'd respect their loyalty to such a terrible team. Give them one good season, and suddenly they grow huge brass balls and talk smack about the NL Champs? Remember... this Rays team finished 19 games out of their division, and 11 games out of a playoff spot.

Is this really happening?

I think they've been hanging around all the Yankmee fans in Tampa...Plus they play Boston a lot....and Interleague against the Mets and Phillies...Osmosis I think is the scientific term.

Well ill  Jump on this two..being a Brewers Fan.. The phillies do cheat no way would have have beat Milwaukee last year if they hadnt. *and yes this is sarcasim*...I just thought it was nice that the Phills let us win one game so we could get the extra revenue from a second home playoff game instead of just one.

Nope, at least not this one.  Frankly, that dude is obviously reaching to come up with something outrageous to say.  I don't recall any other Rays fans (and yes, there are more than 6 of us out there!) saying the Phillies cheated in last year's WS or any other time before or after that.

And this article blowing out of proportion one dork's sorry, bitter opinion is also pretty lame.  And judgemental too, lumping all of a particular team's fans into one category.  As the saying goes: those in glass houses.............

It's not just one dork's sorry, bitter opinion. There are definitely others.

Oh, well I didn't read the responses to his blog. My guess is you would find the same reactions on other teams' blogs too after their particular team loses. That's just what you get in sports these days.

Not me. I still wish the Rays would've won but no saying anyone cheated.

5 years ago, no one out there knew tampa HAD a team, now their all frontrunners, due to one good season. sure they went from hopeless to above average, and now people sit in the outfield, but they have ZERO room to talk, at all.

In a year or so, those so-called "bandwagoners" will be gone & then the Rays can go back to being perennial losers again.

There's absolutely no fans like that anywhere, where there was a downtrodden team that suddenly became successful and the fans didn't become in turn unbearably obnoxious and the most hated fans in sports.  Sorry Pat, if I knew you were a fan of any other team outside of the AL East, I would take this article a bit more seriously.

The Red Sox have had faithful fans forever. Our entire fan base isn't a bandwagon, like the Rays. You can't deny that.

That's not what I mean.  People actually empathized with your fan base before you started winning.  Just like most of us empathized with the small fan base for the Rays before they became a force last year.  I'm just saying it's the pot calling the kettle black on your part.  Sure the Rays have more bandwagon fans than true fans like the Red Sox, but the reactions to the success have been largely the same from true fans and bandwagoners alike.

Well... I'm of the opinion that if a franchise suffers for 86 years and is the butt of everyone's jokes for decades but the fans remain faithful, then they're entitled to shove it back in people's faces when they essentially become the team of the decade. But when a team goes completely ignored for their entire existence and STILL doesn't sell out after going to the World Series, I think it's pretty BS when people come out of the woodwork saying they are lifetime fans and the such. I call BS on that.

I understand your hatred for bandwagon fans, as most of us do.  So your point is that if a team's fan base suffers longer than another, than it's okay to be obnoxious jerks, but the others can't?   So if the Cubs ever win, you will say that's okay for the fans to turn into this decade's Boston sports fans, but if the Cleveland Browns were to win a Super Bowl (this is a TOTAL hypothetical), their fans haven't suffered long enough to allow them to become obnoxious?  Since you've introduced the longevity of a fan base's suffering as a justification for acting like a bunch of off-putting, obnoxious homers, what is your cut-off point for when that's okay and when it's not?

Honestly, if the Cubs OR Browns win a championship, they have at least 3 years to say and do whatever the hell they want, as far as I'm concerned. I can't logically explain this, but football years seem longer. Don't even ask me to explain that, because I just can't.

Yes, I understand.  Using the Browns was a bad example for this context (I might as well have used the Indians anyway).  So how about the Mariners?  They haven't been in the league as long, but they've long suffered, just the same.  I'm just wondering where you're coming up with these seemingly arbitrary numbers.  3 years to be obnoxious (Boston fans have taken that far longer proportionately-the Cubs have been suffering longer than that).  86 years for Boston, okay.  A little over a decade for Tampa, not okay.  The Mariners would have something like 30-40 years.  Right in the middle.
Look, I'm understanding what you're saying, I'm just seeing it as being hypocritical considering your own fan base is one of the most obnoxious in the entire world of sports since the Pats beat the Rams in 2001, and the Red Sox fans did nothing to lessen that perception.  In fact, they made it exponentially worse.  I'll give you my own personal feeling that I don't care if Rays fans get obnoxious.  They DO have a reason to act like they haven't been there, just like your fans did when they won the first of their World Series this decade.  But calling them out for being obnoxious too long after their success from last year is definitely smacking of hypocrisy, regardless of the length of suffering being proportionate to the length of time allowed to be obnoxious pricks (I'm not necessarily including you in there, but a large portion of your fan base I can't speak of as such)

I was just trying to imagine the Browns winning the Super Bowl when a unicorn gored me.

Like I've posted before, the Red Sox rarely sold out in the 1970's let alone the 1920's which is precisely where the Rays franchise is in relation to the one in Boston still known as the Red Sox. The Red Sox Nation didn't exist until the 60's which was well into the seventh decade of existence for the team. Will the Rays trade away Longoria like the Red Sox did Ruth? Maybe...but then Longoria is no Ruth. Pat, this was a bit of a reach: Rays fans calling Philly cheaters?....Filthy? Yes. Classless? Yes. Cheaters? They aren't smart enough...
