Red Sox sign Kevin Youkilis to a 4 year, $40M extension
No Teixeira? No problem. Red Sox give Kevin Youkilis a contract extension for 4 years, $40 million.

Kevin Youkilis finished third last year in All Star voting and was the starting first baseman in the 2008 All Star game.

$10 million a year for a Gold Glove-winning first baseman who can play both corner infield positions, has a great on-base percentage, and two things Mark Teixeira doesn't have:

Two World Series Rings.

I'll take it.

The red sox are just trying to keep up with the YANKEES!

Pat, are you surprised Youk took the $40 mil? It seems in the past he was set on just waiting his arbitration years out to get to the 9-figure contract.

Thats a pretty affordable deal too.  Now all the Red Sox have to do is throw a whole ton of prospects at the Brewers for Prince Fielder.

The Red Sox will still finish higher than the Yankees in that division no matter how much they spend.

What a bargain, not only in the League nowadays, but in the Division.  Great Player, Great Teamate, Great Attitude, all for 10 million per YOUK!!!

I am a little surprised. I feel like this is well below market value for him, and the Red Sox are getting an absolute steal here, and it's really not even a secret. Teixeira got all the hype, but Youk is a nearly identical player. His power numbers are a little lower, but last year he showed that he has some pop, too.

...and yet..the Steinbrenner's resigned Cashman...makes you mad doesn't it....

Feel free to tell me what the difference is between the two of them, other than the aforementioned power advantage for Teixeira? Other than the HR's, they are nearly the same player, except Youkilis is a gold glove level fielder at BOTH corner positions.

I love Prince's power but he's going to be out of baseball sooner than later due to his body type.  Vegetarian or not, estranged from his dad or not, he's still Cecil's son and big man is going to break down, just like Mo Vaughn did.  The Coke machine-build, barely 6 foot, north of 260 guys don't last long in MLB.

Me too.  Those two World Series Rings last forever, and that guy is clutch.

The Sox did great getting Youkilis AND Pedroia.  Not on my team but still 2 of my favorites!  Great talents and abilities.  Will be fun to watch em down the Yankees!  Both are just consistently reliable!  And I agree Heyhey.. great clutch players!  Shows that to some, maybe the money isn't everything!  Still not a bad salary!  *lol*

Wow, Epstein can make some sweet deals.  What a bargain.  It also speaks to the loyalties of Youk if he's willing to stay so cheaply.  I love that guy..but not in man on man way.

is this a serious comment?  the yankees are just trying to keep up with themselves.  even with all their signings this off season, they have only replaced players they lost or who got hurt; they have barely improved the team.  the red sox are signing low-risk high-reward guys and their own players.  when was the last time the yankees developed even one player worth signing to a long term contract?

plus, it has gotten to the point where the yankees MUST overpay people to go to their team.  it is now a 5 year trend of the red sox out manuvering and out winning the yankees.  it appears things have gotten a little desperate in the bronx.  and it will continue when you are paying a 37 year old mark teixeria $23 million.

Unfortunately, I agree.  Thats why I'm willing to let him go now.  That and he wants to be paid big time right now.

That's what the Cubs payed for Milton Bradley. What were they thinking?

I hear you, but Bradley led the American League in on-base percentage last year, so he might be worth the money.  This is especially true since he's left-handed (and the lineup is right-hand dominant).  He's just got to stay healthy.

While I agree Youk is probably worth closer to 13-15 mil/yr, lets not start sucking Theo off.  The fact is Youk was under team control for two more years and had no leverage.  He had the choice to wait it out, hope he has another career year like last year (which is not going to happen by the way), and stays injury free, than try his luck in arbitration, where at most he would have gotten a bump to 6 million/yr., from his current 3 mil in salary.  Instead he takes the longer term security, cashes in on that big production year, get financial piece of mind for life, and stays in a situation where he know he has a chance to win.  This is a more common thing nowadays, teams locking up prospects still under their control.  You get them into the early years of their prime for little money, and then make a decision on whether or not to give them the big payday.  Smart business model, for sure.  The Pedroia deal is the same thing, but the Sox aren't blazing the trail.  The Rays, Rockies, Twins, have been doing it for a couple years now.

Oh and as far as the Texiera thing.  1:  Let Youk average .285/.380/.530  30 110 for a few more years before you put him in the same category.  2.  The Sox would have been a much better team with Youk and Texiera.  That was the plan when they went after Tex.  Not to replace Youklis but to help him.  The Sox were going to lock this guy up regardless.
