Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini joked about punching Samir Nasri after the midfielder emerged from a slump in form to become the star for the Eastlands in a 4-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Roberto Mancini admits he has been frustrated with Samir Nasri for not fulfilling his potential at Manchester City this season. The Italian boss believes the Frenchman has not done enough to prove his worth to the team.

The 25-year-old France international has found himself under the gun from Roberto Mancini for his poor run of form this season. However, Samir Nasri has responded well to criticism from his boss and his fans to show he can prove to be a great asset.

“I would like to give him a punch, because a player like him should play like this always. Every game. Maybe one game sometimes he can play badly,” Roberto Mancini said.

“I don't know what was different. I can't understand how a player with his quality doesn't play like today every game. The second year is always difficult to win the title again. And sometimes the player can think it is enough to play 50 per cent. We've probably had this problem this year. I think that every player is intelligent. Samir knows that he played very well.”

Roberto Mancini informed Samir Nasri has been unable to turn into the threatening force he was during Manchester City’s Premier League victory last season. The former Inter Milan manager also accused his team of complacency in defending their Premier League title.

“The club was born more than 100 years ago but as a strong team we were born two years ago,” Roberto Mancini said. “And every year you need to improve your team. Maybe sometimes some player can think: 'Ok we can play maybe not like last year but we will still win because we are good quality players'. But this is not true.”

Roberto Mancini also commented on Vincent Kompany’s decision to play for Belgium in the World Cup qualifiers last week. Roberto Mancini claims the Belgium national team should have allowed Vincent Kompany to recover from his calf injury before setting him on the field. Roberto Mancini also rubbished reports suggesting there was a rift between him and the Manchester City skipper.

“Did I speak to him? No. For what? Vinny knows his behaviour was not good,” Roberto Mancini said. “He is important for us. I am happy that he played well and played without any problem in his calf. I hope it will be like this for the next two months.”
