Roger Federer beats Rafael Nadal on clay 6-4, 6-4 at the Madrid Masters
Federer beats Nadal. On clay. In Nadal's home country. Can Federer carry this over to the French Open?
With just a few weeks to go before the French Open, Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-4 on clay at the Madrid Masters.

Could this be a preview of the French Open? With Federer finally winning the Gran Slam that he doesn't have?

May "just be" the Madrid Masters, but very impressive nonetheless.

Also helped that Nadal played a 19-hour match against Djokovic yesterday, but still, whatever works.

From the article: The win also ended a remarkable run of success on clay for world number one Nadal, who was unable to repeat his heroics from Saturday's epic semifinal against Novak Djokovic when he fought back from the brink to win a gruelling battle 3-6 7-6 7-6 in four hours and three minutes, saving three match points along the way.

So, I mean Nadal was clearly way less than 100%. Either way though, this will help Fed mentally for the French Open.

Ok..Federer's best is better than Nadal's best....unfortunately,Nadal's average is better than Federer's average....Federer hasn't been at his best for some time now,and that explains Nadal's recent dominance....At his best, nobody comes  close to Federer....all in all, these two are definately the greatest of  all time, watch out for Murray though...

Roger simply out played Rafa on this one.  And it is NO minor tournament.  Trying to call it Nadal's weariness that allowed Roger to win, is only to be kidding yourself.  Roger took HIS game to the court this time, as he should.  Rafa had his chances, he was unable to capitalize on them.  I, for one, will be looking forward to some OUTSTANDING tennis in the 2009 French Open.  If Roger can take this one, it will drive their rivalry to new heights.  Definitely Novak Djokovic is no one to ignore, his game has been improving steadily, and to forget Andy Murray would be foolishness.  Women's tennis at the French Open should also be VERY exciting!  Ana Invanovic will try to defend her 1st ever French Open title, and Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams will be doing their best to keep that from happening.

Certainly if every one play acc. to their credentials..then his french open will separate the best from the rest but..u know wid federer ,djokovic and murray this never happens..and nadal seems 2 get it right everytime..but if roger doesn't get it this time..then there's no time..left for him to try more..he will become another classic example of pete..while nadal of borg...but we have faith in u federer..history needn't necessarily repeat itself!!
