Rumor: Phil Jackson Will Retire, and Mike Krzyzewski Will Coach the Lakers
Here's your super-huge rumor of the day. Phil Jackson will retire, and Mike Krzyzewski will coach the Lakers.
I would say that this is nothing more than a rumor, but the reporter who wrote about it says there's a lot to it.

On Wednesday, a blurb appeared in the Racine Journal Times in Gery Woelfel's column. His source says Phil Jackson will step down as the Los Angeles Lakers head coach and Mike Krzyzewski will be the sought after replacement.

The note also hinted that Lakers star Kobe Bryant would want to see Krzyzewski get the job.

Woelful said Wednesday that his source is a very accurate one who usually hits home runs on all his calls
.

This isn't really all that crazy. Coach K has been linked to potentially coaching the Lakers in the past. He also worked closely with Kobe during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the two really do seem to like each other.

Also, let's be honest. Duke isn't likely to be hoisting an NCAA Championship trophy anytime soon, so maybe Coach K bolting to the Lakers isn't a bad idea.

I'll believe it when I see it.  This rumor has came up in the recent past, and it has been nothing more than a rumor.  While Kobe and Coach K have a good relationship from past events, Coach K is the King of Duke basketball, and will never have to do another thing in his life when he decides to retire.  Phil Jackson is also in a serious relationship with the owner's daughter, and has Kobe Bryant still in his prime on a very good team.  Too much good for either coach to bolt from current situations, and if it happens, I wouldn't mind.  But I'll believe it when it actually happens.

yea but its different coaching college kids than  grown me, even thou some dont act like it. It would be nice to see coach K try something new, but i think the pressure would be mind boggling. alot could happen this offseaon thou, so who knows. Kobe could opt out, become a free agent so anythings possible.

Some NBA team offered Bob Knight a Head Coaching job and he turned it down; reason: he can't handle the players; I think coach K will stay at Duke; fans will be thrown into an absolute uproar if he leaves.

I highly doubt this, but Kobe does love the guy.

KObe opt out and become a free agent? Not! But I do agree there would be pressure stepping up to coach the Lakers. College players are grown, too, and both can still act like little boys. It would be nice to see Coach K elevate, though.

Bob Knight is a maniac coach and his players weren't getting (legally) paid to perform. Pros don't have to take that abuse from that psycho, compared to college kids on scholarships to schools with no option to drop and still play.

the key word was "could"

Coach K already turned down a giant offer, he's the king of Durham with easily managed teens and he'll always have Dicky V praising him on TV; So, why leave for the hell associated with pro athletes?

Well, he'll certainly drag out a "will I, won't I" melodrama for a week or so like he does every 5 years and is currently doing with USA Basketball.  He loves attention.

I totally doubt that either Jackson leaving the Lakers or K leaving Duke is going to happen anytime soon.

I said it when it came up before, Coach K should take the Lakers job. It's just a smart move for all parties involved, if Jackson really does want to retire. Coach K has shown he can coach top pro talent, he'd be a successful coach in the NBA and Kobe would play for him, so that's a plus.

Also, it would be good for Duke to get some new blood in there. I think Duke has been in a stagnant period for the past 5 years or so and frankly it seems to me like Coach K is more interested in things outside of Duke, like Team USA, than he has been interested in things at Duke. Coach K has done well above and beyond anyone's wildest expectations at Duke, winning 3 NCAA championships and turning Duke into a real power program. Now, I think it is fair to say it is time for someone else to step in and move the Duke program into a new era.

I do not see that happening in any way. I think Coach K has seen enough of his colleagues make the jump to the NBA and get fried. So he will stay in his kingdom.

The Laker job when Phil steps down will be between: Byron Scott, Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw.
