Hunter Smith originally injured his groin muscle in the game against Tampa Bay. He re-aggravated it in the game against the Eagles, and no amount of physical therapy or conditioning has brought him back to the point where he can play this weekend.
The Redskins looked at Sam Paulescu, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys and Reggie Hodges. Paulescu spent 2008 with the Cowboys, kicking 53 punts, with the longest being 70 yards. Smith has had 24 punts so far this season.
Hunter has not yet been placed on the Injured Reserve, as Coach Zorn wants to give him one more week of treatment to see if the injury will heal. It is, however, becoming a very definite option.
