Scott Rolen traded to the Cincinnati Reds, Jerry Hairston to the Yankees
The Reds have traded for Scott Rolen. Don't ask me why, because I honestly have no idea.
This one doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but the Reds traded for aging, injury-prone, expensive third baseman Scott Rolen. Yeah, I know. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, either. In other news, the Reds also traded Jerry Hairston, Jr to the Yankees

Hey there, don't steal my joke. Although I said 5 years ago. 10 is probably better, actually.

??? Yes Rolen is hella with the bat this year but...uh.... is he really going to help the Reds hunt down the Cards?

Maybe the Reds think they still have a shot. Maybe they'll pull a Rockies from 2007, then dump in the offseason, like the Marlins always do. It's a long, long, long shot, but I'm still holding out hope in this season.

Sounds to me like a salary dump by the Blue Jays.  Could they be trying to free up as much money as possible long term to try and resign Roy Halladay?

Now he can wear his lucky red socks he wore when he won the World Series with the Cards.

Dadburn, Is it me, or are the Reds THAT desperate?

Dusty loves his veterans, even broken down ones.  He tried for like 3 years in a row to get 500 AB's for Neifi Perez.  There must be some rookies in Cincinatti he's afraid to play.

How angry must Roy Halladay be at this point? Ricciardi purposefully dangled his name in trade rumors, then set an exorbitantly high price and a phony, self-imposed deadline. All the while, Halladay was a class act, saying he'd welcome the chance to play for a contender but never throwing the Jays under the bus or demanding a trade. When Halladay didn't get traded, Ricciardi said he intended on trying to contend with Halladay next year.

Well, I'm sure the Rolen trade put a jolt right through the Toronto clubhouse. And now Halladay is condemned to playing for a likely last-place AL East team, at least until Ricciardi (or the Jays' new GM) is forced to deal Halladay for less than he would've gotten at this deadline. Way to overplay your hand, moron.

Considering that the Orioles are hardly a team anymore.

The Orioles actually look like they're on the up-and-up, with Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, and Brian Roberts in a decent lineup, and three really highly touted prospects coming up into the rotation (including Chris TIllman, who made his first start this past week).

This is all in contrast to the Blue Jays, who despite some decent young starting pitching are also paying Alex Rios and Vernon Wells about a billion dollars to hit in the 6th and 7th holes. Oh, and they're paying BJ Ryan eight figures to NOT play for them.

Dont forget that Adam Lind (their .300, 20+ HR ... rite now...DH) is a free agent after this season too. The Jays need to come up with some serious jack to keep what they got for next year. Maybe the Rolen dump doesnt look so bad when you take a step back. Halliday and Lind are gonna cost them a ton to hang on too.

This trade leaves me scratching my head.  I can only guess that the Reds figured that a verteran presence in the clubhouse might help them stop this horrible skid and get them back on track.  I doubt it has any shot at having that result.  It is painfully obvious that they haven't had anyone step up to lead this team.  Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips are the only real threats in the Reds lineup.  Rolen should give them a little extra pop, but it seems like the Reds are just making a poor attempt to rewrite the same old story; the Reds start out pretty hot, and then it all collapses in July.

The thing that makes the least sense to me about this trade is, Rolen is not the best clubhouse guy, and you know he's not too excited to be heading to Cincinnati.  So, this could end up being counterproductive.  I guess it can't hurt this floundering club too much, but I always liked Edwin.  And even though he's notoriously inconsistant, I don't like to see him leave. Good luck in Canada Edwin!

Because Rolen had a no trade clause, he did have some say in if he wanted to go to the Reds.  That means one of two things....he either saw something promising with the Reds or he figured all hell was about to break loose with the Blue Jays and he wanted out ASAP

I'd say it's more likely the latter.  He's from Indiana.  Maybe he just wanted to be closer to home.

Exactly rite Drake!!! Scott is from Evansville, Indiana (3 hrs from Cincy). Plus he knows Great American Ballpark is a Launching Pad in left field. He should be able to easily double his HR output in Cincinnati .... and have alot of friends in attendance watching him do it. This had to be a NO BRAINER for him.

You all disagree with this trade, But Edwin Encarnacion was a poor defensive 3rd baseman who was prone to making alot of errors and not great at the plate. We now get a 3rd baseman who is one of the best 3rd baseman in the league on defense and great at the plate that can drive in runs and can be a leader to the younger teammates

it looks like a win for the reds in a weird way because the jays are paying part of Rolen's salary in 2010 as well. Look for the Reds pitchers to love rolen's defense and last i looked Rolen's hitting .320+,Edwin was barley above .200
