Scouting QB's is like Defusing Bombs... Only Riskier
READ MORE:
I have watched several games that Terrelle Pryor has started at the high school and college level and in both cases he has at times been able to simply seize games by the throat  but, Pryor is too often inaccurate in the pocket, his passes lack consistent zip, he lacks hip torque on his  throws that even when he's not rushed he tends to throw off his back foot, he  lobs the ball and has a tendency to throw what a coaching friend of mine called 'Hospital Balls' because when the receiver drifts back and jumps to get to the ball the free safety will have the opportunity to spin his eyes like a slot machine jackpot.

I happen to believe that it's usually unwise to get down on college kids who are barely 19 or 20 and I am sure in time Pryor will get better than he is now but the early heroics of true Freshman QBs like: Matt Barkley, Tate Forcier and other first year starters like Blaine Gabbert and Junior Greg McElroy have put Pryor under additional pressure.

Pryor's basic fundamentals are still a mess in terms of footwork, weight transfer and he doesn't read coverages well.   After the USC game many opined that Barkley is already ahead of Pryor in several passing areas and with the exception of athletic ability Pryor has not distinguished himself. Pryor is a rare physical specimen and possibly the most physically gifted player to arrive in Columbus since Eddie George, though I do not see 4.33 speed and I will be shocked if he is not  in the mid to upper 4.4s at the combine, still he has tremendous potential.

The other comparison many have made is to fellow sophomore Jacory Harris.  Again Pryor is bigger, stronger and faster, while Harris has 4.62 speed he uses his feet to extend plays and find receiver working across or down the field, the other big difference is how far Harris is ahead in reading coverage, though some of this growth must be attributed to QB coach Mark Whipple it must also be mentioned that Harris is a noted gym rat who breaks down film on his IPOD, plays NCAA and Madden video games to study his own tendencies as well as those of possible opponents, while many have compared Pryor to Vince Young, most are comparing Harris to Randall Cunningham.  At nearly 6'4" and only 191 pounds Harris is built very much like Cunningham at the same age, Harris has a good arm but not nearly as strong as Cunningham's at the same age.  Young and Pryor have similar size, builds and even playing styles, however Young sat and waited behind Sims and was not expected to win games early in his career as a starter as the Longhorns of the era had an exceptional running game, future pros at WR and a great defense, now there's a large number of talented players in Columbus but the losses at WR to the draft are hurting them and questions about QB coaching are building to a roar on message boards.  In his defense he has sped up his decision making process, is more proficient in checking off his primary target and get the ball out of his hand on time and getting better in anticipating his targets getting open.

If Pryor stays all 4 years at Ohio State it will be fascinating to see if he works on seeing the whole field, using his legs and trunk to drive the ball on a line, start stepping into passes and run with abandon when the opportunity presents itself.  If he does he might have some dramatic comebacks and a chance to stay a QB on Sundays, if not he might be following the [on field hopefully] trail of Matt Jones, because thus far he looks more like him than Young or Cunningham.

Pryor is an OK QB, but he's got a lot of growing up to do.

Well, at least Pryor has already proven that he's pretty good at catching the jump ball fade.

What I have noticed is that the lower picked QBs have more success in the league. They have less pressure and have the time they need to learn the system. Besides that it's awhole new ball game. the transition from playing with kids in their 20s to full grown seasoned men that will put that @ss in the dirt!!! They should keep the age limit up and require you to play four years of College. This is not the NBA this is the NFL all about being physical and burying you in the dirt!!

Tell that to Brady Quinn.
