Shaquille O'Neal says he wants to play basketball until he's 40
Shaq has decided that he now wants to play until he's 40. Just wake him up when the playoffs start.
This could be great news or horrible news. Shaq, who had previously said he would retire after the 2009-2010 season, now wants to play until he's 40 (he's currently 37). If the Cavs win a championship next season, then by all means, might make sense to bring Shaq back. But if not, Shaq's contract is up, and who would want to sign him to a large contract at age 38? Not me.

But seriously, if Shaq doesn't win a championship with the Cavs this next season, and still wants to play until he's 40, expect him to be suiting up for the Timberwolves or Bobcats.

Well, he'd definitely be like setting a record or whatever. You have to be a little bit dumb to play until your 40. Plus, he'll make more money running some business somewhere else instead of playing when he's that old.

My concern here is that Shaq, like Brett Favre in the NFL, is trying to stretch his playing career long past its prime.  I know of very few professional athletes who knew when to walk out of the game - John Elway, Michael Jordan, Steve Young, and Wayne Gretzky come to mind.  They left their respective sports still on top of their game, which is how we want to remember them.  Unfortunately, ever since the sad end of Babe Ruth's baseball career, we see far too often players who try to reclaim former glory when the best years have already come and gone.  Shaq and Favre are both going to be in the Hall of Fame for their accomplishments, but I don't want to see an aging Shaq struggling to make points on the board against men half his age.  If the Cavs do win an NBA title, then Shaq should retire at season's end and let Lebron James be the court leader.

Well Young had to go, 5 concussions 3 of them severe, Jordan's not a good example he had about as many retirements as Favre, Barry Sanders and Jim Brown are probably better examples, even Mike Mussina who was the first pitcher to call it quits following a 20-victory season since Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax in 1966, is a better example.  But let's face it most of these athlete's love the game, love the fame and the $$$$.  What helps is O'Meal, sorry that's an old nickname I game him he's now in much better shape, does play a position where if he is on a 1/2 court team and plays reduced minutes, he could make it to 40 pretty easily, and this time by position I mean center not oversized, self-amused loudmouth.

Shaq has said he would look at taking less money if he returns after this contract and last season he said he'd consider coming back to the Lakers after his deal is up and wouldn't have a problem tutoring/backing up Andrew Bynum. Having followed Shaq since I was trading his rookie cards way back when in '92 there is one thing I know, there is a huge difference between what Shaq says and what he actually does. Look, if he actually considers taking something close to the vet minumum then what team wouldn't like to have him at that price? He definitely is not worth the $20+mill a season he makes now, but at 1/4 that he'd be a great backup - but for Shaq to actually follow through on doing it is another thing.

Shaq is a clown but he needs the team to revolve around him, look how he slowly froze out Amare Stoudamire at his last stop when he promised he'd help make him a beast? Things should work initially in Cleveland but look at them around the all-star break for an indication of how it is really going to work there - should be interesting!

Well wanting to play until he is 40, and actually doing it  until he is 40 are Two different things! Let's just wait and see what's going to happen!
