Shaquille O'Neal says the Portland Trail Blazers tried to trade for him in February of 2009
Shaq says the Trail Blazers tried to trade for him last season. The Blazers must already know Oden is a bust.
This sounds pretty weird, but I'm not doubting it happened. Shaq says that during this past season, Steve Kerr brought him in and said the Trail Blazers were very interested in trading for him. Kerr asked Shaq if he wanted to go to Portland, Shaq said no, and that was the end of it.

Portland, meanwhile, is denying this story outright, since one can understand how if this is true, it kind of looks like the Blazers think Oden is a bust already.

I'm not sure who's telling the truth here, but it's interesting to think about would have happened had Shaq gone to Portland, and who the Blazers would have given up to get him.

calling him a bust is about the most stupid internet trend...
his per 35 minute stats are right on par with dwight howard.. minus a few points..
the guy doesn't get to play long because he gets in foul trouble, caused by portlands gaurds not being able to hold there man..
do some research..
this just makes you look unintelligent

He's a bust (so far) because he is fragile and cannot stay on the court.  For the Number 1 Pick money that is mulching in his bank account - he is a bust.  Maybe 5 years from now he'll have shed this label and has become a bona fide all-star.  Then again maybe 5 years from now he'll be out of the league with a network commentary job.

It's understandable. They were a young team, but they were talented enough for a title with another inside player alongside Aldridge. So not only did they have the pieces in terms of young talent and/or picks, but they also could have used him.

Why would they do that when they have Greg Oden (a/k/a Sam Bowie Jr.) on the roster?

Don't make comments about the Blazers (i.e. Joeaklin) unless the person knows about the Blazers.  Living here in Portland I'm not a Blazer fan but I listen to the sports talk.  They don't consider him a bust and they probably wanted to trade for Shaq cause they have no post offensive game.  Surge basically nailed it, except the title part they weren't ready for that run yet.

Now the other point is this, Oden isn't a bust big men take a long time to develop and it's not a point to label him that yet.  Also the man has only played what 3 years of  "higher level" comp for hoops (1 college 2 NBA).  So give the guy time and he doesn't need to be all-world he needs to be like Marcus Camby.

One other thing again at Joeaklin don't base all this crap cause the only time you saw Portland was on TNT for the playoffs.  I don't feel that Blake and Roy are bad at defense at all and the problem with Oden getting in foul trouble were lots of ticky tack fouls and the fact that he played against Yao.  I may not be a Blazer fan but I'll be damned if I'll let someone roll on a website I'm on spitting nonsense about my area and city.

uh lived in portland or near area for 23 years.. And I'm an avid blazers fan. Roy is amazing offensively but lacks on his lock down D. Blake... plays no D, hes a spot up shooter and decent distributor.  oh i watched 88 games this past season.
it is known that portlands guards can work on D.
oh and if you reread what i wrote, i was defending oden, stating that he has numbers on par with dwight howard..(per 35 minutes)

They were giving up raefs expiring contract similar to the cleveland deal. The idea is shaq could mentor G.O.
