Someone tries to make a claim that Phelps isn't the greatest Olympic athlete, essentially because he's a swimmer

When Philip Hersh has actually competed in the Olympics as opposed to sitting on his ass, disclaiming someone else's hard-earned success, then I might give a crap what he has to say.

The problem for swimmers is that the water makes what they do look so much easier.  I've done some competitive swimming before in my life, and its one heckuva workout.  It'll drain your energy much quicker than basketball, football, baseball, or just about anything.

I dont get the argument that Phelps isnt in the same class as Lewis and others because of there long term record.  The guy is completely dominating his sport and is one win away from setting an Olympic record for most gold medals in one Olympics.  I dont care if he is "just a swimmer", that makes you the greatest Olympic athlete in my mind.

I saw this article from a Cleveland newspaper:
Let the debate begin: Is Phelps the greatest Olympian?...

While I don't necessarily agree with his argument, I like the fact that he's including Owens not only for his on-field prowess.

I don't care what these reporters think, Phelps has proven himself in my eyes to be one of the best olympic athletes ever! I am so tired of all the comparisons. It is impossible to compare different sports let alone athletes who participate in the same sport but during a different time.

On another note---swimming is a tough sport. Those who discredit or devalue it are crazy! Oh, and I love the argument about how swimming is less demanding on your body----sure it is---those who say so don't swim.

I am tired of someone in the media always trying to demean or tear down others accomplishments. What Phelps has done is remarkable. No matter what people may think of his sport. Swimming is a physical demanding sport and to win the amount of golds he has and this year setting world records on top of that should be celebrated. No wonder the MSM is treated with disdain. I for one am proud an American is doing this. It makes me sad we as a scoiety have come to this.

What Phelps has done is nothing short of incredible.  I can't believe anybody would try to discredit his accomplishments.  Let's see Hersch win a medal...PERIOD!  Let's see him try to run the 1500M Freestyle that's on now.  I bet he would already be passed out on the edge of the pool, and the race is only about half over.
