Sports Columinst says computer simulation baseball better than fantasy baseball
Fat-headed columnist argues that fantasy baseball is stupid and that his computer simulation baseball is somehow vastly superior. He should be fired by tomorrow.

Fantasy baseball (and most other fantasy sports) are not just about winning and stats.  Fantasy sports in some odd sense is also about camaraderie that can develop through leagues and drafts.  Not exactly exciting to talk trash over computer generated stats or maybe I'm missing his point.  I really enjoy getting together for the draft and having a couple beverages.  I also enjoy fantasy sports because it gives me more reason to watch games that I have no interest in otherwise.

I played fantasy baseball back in the day when it was called rotessiore league, and before spreadsheets.  I dont play any more, too much of it comes down to luck, aka injuries.  Anyway, my problem with fantasy sports is that it fans do not understand the game.  They only understand the stats, and what the stats mean.  The latter is not too bad in baseball, but its really bad in football.  I have noticed over the years that the average fans do not understand the game itself.  For example, in Philadelphia this offseason the fans wanted TJ Housmanzadi.  They are looking at his stats, and think he is the solution to the Eagles WR problems.  The problem is that TJ is a possession reciever.  The Eagles already have a possession reciever, and need a reciever that can stretch the field.  Also, fans judge the value of a player soley on his stats.  For example, some fans would think a RB who rushes for 1,200 yards and 10 TDs is a better RB, than one that rushes for 1,000 yards and 8 TDs, but is able to pickup blitzes and help block for the QB.  Finally, I notice that a lot of the fantasy fans become so involed with their league that when they watch a game they are more concerned about their players, and miss the little things going on during the game.

Ill probably take a lot of heat for this, but I feel that fantasy football (not so much in baseball) prevents fans from truly understanding the game itself.

In his defense, simulation baseball can be addicting as hell, although one probably needs to be a huge baseball nerd to find them enjoyable. I haven't played a sim league in a while, but I certainly would again.
