Steve Nash wanted Shaquille O'Neal to be traded
The Suns didn't just get rid of Shaq for salary cap reasons, they got rid of him because Steve Nash didn't like playing with him.
A lot of people think the Suns traded Shaq to gain cap space. But apparently, they also did it because Steve Nash said he wanted Shaq traded.

According to an NBA source, Nash expressed his displeasure with O'Neal during a meeting last week in New York with general manager Steve Kerr.

"I think he told him [Kerr] that if O'Neal was there, he wouldn't be around much longer,'' said the NBA source who requested his name not be used. "That pretty much sealed it.''

Nash had grown weary of O'Neal's inability to keep up with the fast-paced play that the Suns had been so successful with in the past and with O'Neal's demand to be a bigger part of the offense.

If Kerr was smart he'd get rid of Nash too while he still has some value.  The Suns are done, may as well get a head start on the rebuilding instead of pretending they can fix it with Nash and contend again.

Funny thing, had they not been cheap and sold Rondo and Rudy they would have a decent backcourt nucleus.

There is still no comparison to the mileage on Shaq's body. Shaq has been killed for years thanks in large part to refs and Nash not so much save for a hip check and a bloody nose here and there. Shaq is 37 and 325. Nash's abilities isn't all physical. He facilitates and makes good decisons. If they are both in their prime no denying you go with Shaq but this is late in the career and stay with the guy with less wear and tear. I agree with trying to get some value for him too sorta like NJ did with Kidd and Vince Carter. It would make since to get very young talented guys that will help the next 10-12 years over the next 3-4

If the Suns make trade with Golden State. Nash still want win. Who in the hell he like to play with to win? Go get Dirk.

Me thinks Kerr is already a terrible GM and is doing a terrible job either trying to blow it up or build around Nash. I see no plan of action at all there.

if you think about it, there is really no reason for nash not to like shaq. they are two very good players. he is probably just jealous, because shaq is a little bit better than he is. he probably doesn't like having another great player on his team who can easily steal the spotlight from him.

Maybe. But I think in reality Nash doesn't like missing the playoffs and probably got frustrated that he had to change his game to facilitate Shaq and not the other way around. Nash has had success in Phoenix and he's had success playing a certain way. A new guy (even the great Shaq) comes in and forces you to change your style and then you miss the playoffs, I can see that being very frustrating.

Honestly it would be great if the Suns found a way to trade Nash too. Dallas can use him and not re-sign Kidd. Re-tread PGs! We'll get Devin Harris in 8 years too.

Nash has played with Dirk, Amare and Shawn Marion. Saying he is jealous is crap. He plays a certain way. He win's 2 mvp's by running. Shaq can't play in that kind of offense. If you play MVP ball one way and lead the team deep in the playoffs and then have to change it for one guy and your team struggles. Seems like an easy scapegoat to me. Can't blame Nash wanting to  play to his strength. It was a bad fit.

Fine with me, Shaq really didn't help the suns get any closer to a title. In fact, missing the playoffs this year, you could say that Shaq has taken the suns in reverse.

Calling Nash jealous is like calling Manute Bol the best basketball player ever!!! Nash gave it a shot with Shaq in the fast-paced offense, but it really soured when Shaq didn't get up the court half the time, leaving opposing teams with a 5-4 player advantage. Granted, Amare got hurt 2 games after the Suns fired Porter(Thank God), so they most likely would've made the playoff's with Amare, but Nash is the most unselfish player ever to grance an NBA court. He doesn't care at all about his statistics! All he cares about is how well his team does. Learn a little bit more about a back-2-back MVP before slamming him!

This is all speculation.
The most logical reason is Suns are going back to run-and-gun style, and Shaq is just not suitable for that. Plus, Shaq is on his final year, why not get something from it? Very simple, isn't it?
