The NHL Trade Deadline was today and among all of the surprises, there was none bigger than the first trade ever between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers.  Coach Sutter of the Flames has said he's been trying to work out other deals with the rival Oilers, but this is the first one that has come to fruition.

Defenceman, Steve Staios, will join the Calgary Flames, in exchange for Aaron Johnson and a draft pick (third round in either 2010 or 2011 - to be decided by the Flames).

The "Battle of Alberta" is well known in my area and most of western Canada will tune in to watch the rivalry which usually features a lot of fists.  Surprisingly, Staios has no problem with his new uniform, saying he has a lot of respect for the Flames organization and looks forward to putting on the jersey and getting to work.

Other trade news for the Flames sees backup goal tender, Curtis McElhinney makes his way to the Anaheim Ducks, while their goaltender, Vesa Toskala becomes a Calgary Flame. There were other minor trades for the Flames as well, but the Staios trade should have the biggest impact on the team.  His veteran play and leadership abilities, plus his professional demeanor will be nothing but positive.
