It's time to play a little catch up since I missed last week. So before we get too carried away, here is a quick recap from two weekends ago when The Amazing Spider-Man impressed with it's 6-day opening weekend take.
Weekend ending 7/8 (weekend gross only)
1. The Amazing Spider-man ($62M) - Opening Weekend
2. Ted ($32.2M)
3. Brave ($19.6M)
4. Savages ($16M) - Opening Weekend
5. Magic Mike ($15.6M)
Spider-Man, the story of a 30 year old man playing a high school outcast won big over the weekend, and took in a total of $137M over its six day opening. I actually thought it would fare better even though everyone knows the story and this is a reboot of a franchise that's less than a decade old. The reviews have been very good so far, but in a safe genre, with a safe history, this isn't a big surprise.
Other openings of note: Katy Perry: Part of Me, 8th $7.1M.. It's hard to believe A) that this movie is in 3D and B) with that bonus ticket cost it still made $7 million bucks
Now onto this past weekend.
1. Ice Age: Continental Drift 3D (Opening Weekend - $46.6M) - If there's one thing you can count on, it's that a sequel to a successful franchise will always do will always be #1 at the box office now matter how good or bad it is. Ice Age: Continental Drift 3D has had a lukewarm reception among critics and again falls into the "There's really no need for Stoney to go to a theater to watch this" category., so I really have nothing to add. Except maybe if you have young kids there's a great chance you'll see this in the next 8 months and you can tell me what you think of it.
2. The Amazing Spider-Man (Week 2 - $34.6M, $200.5M total) - Spidey falls out of the top spot after a long 1 week run at the top. This weekend also brought the domestic gross to over $200M.. Just #10M less than I thought it would make in the first week. Whoops. I admit, I'm not an Andrew Garfield fan so I'm gonna wait as long as possible to check this one out in 3D since that is really the only reason to check this flick out.
3. Ted (Week 3 - $22.4M, $159.3M total) - The little engine that could continues to chug along with an amazing run. And we finally have a movie I got a chance to see. It's definitely the best comedy I've seen this year and it did live up to the hype. But seriously, take the movie for what it is, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Universal Pictures also has to be loving this take as a $50M budget, even with high advertising costs, this movie is help making up for a lackluster last year.
4. Brave ( Week 4 - $11.2M, $196.1M total) - Again, I won't see this movie, so any input from any of my wonderful readers would be greatly appreciated.
5. Savages (Week 2 - $9.4M, $32.1M total) - Oliver Stone's latest directorial effort brings an interesting story to the big screen, an impressive ensemble of actors, but questionable leads. Stone has directed some absolute classic movies such as Platoon, Wall Street, Born on the Fourth of July, and Natural Kilers, and this one looked to have the makings of being special. I'm definitely surprised at the business it's done to date, and it is still in my must see list even though it's carrying that damn rotten tag on Rottentomatoes.com. With the totals to date, you have to wonder how much longer Hollywood will allow Taylor Kitsch to try and carry films.

There's only one movie of note this weekend, and it's one that a lot of people have been waiting all summer and all year for., The Dark Knight Rises.
