And now for something completely different.
Noticing an opportunity to kill a few minutes of my work day and the desire by some to get some locker room content up, I present you my take on the past weekend take at the ol' box office.
Winning the weekend was Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted for the 2nd week in a row, taking in $35.3M and bringing it's total gross to $120.5M.. I'd like to be able to tell you what this is about, but I don't have kids of my own and I'm pretty sure it's illegal to attend this movie alone if you're a 31 year old man. So I'm guessing this film is the animated reboot cross of In Bruges and Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. No wonder it's making a killing.
Prometheus took 2nd place with $20.2M in its second weekend bringing the 2-week total to $88.9M.. I still think it's everything you want in a summer movie, even though a lot of people are obsessing about what it's not. When it comes to the box office numbers, it also helps to remember that this is an R-rated film.
Uh oh, we have a first timer coming in at #3. Rock of Ages debuts this week to a disappointing $15.1M weekend. Are you kidding me? People didn't show up to watch two awful lead actors and a host of cameos by people 100+ times as famous all singing and dancing around, and frankly I'm just shocked. I mean, I will never see this movie, but from what I've read, I'm shocked. A little bit. More disinterest maybe, but still
In 4th place was the Snow White movie that DIDN'T star a horse and a girl with annoying caterpillar eyebrows. Thor and Bella took in $13.8M in their 3rd week, leaving Snow White and the Huntsman at a total of $122.6M.
I almost saw this, this weekend but was able to excuse my way out of it. It seems there weren't
Don't worry, it's almost over. In 5th place came Adam Sandler's first R-rated attempt. That's My Boy opened with a $13M take. My brother certainly enjoyed it, and according to him, the reviews they use in the commercials should include "fu**ing hilarious". It's Adam Sandler, I'm sure it's an awful movie with some belly laughs and memorable lines. Take it for what it's worth.
Of interest (mainly to me): Moonrise Kingdom led all films on a per average basis, taking in $2.2M on 174 screens for an average of $12.3K. Indie favorite Mark Duplass had a respectable weekend as Your Sister's Sister averaged $9K per the 13 screens it was shown and Safety Not Guaranteed took in an average of $6.3K per 47 screens.
