Hi again everybody, it's that time to take a look back at the weekend and see which cinema fare caught the eye of America. There were several newcomers, and with the 6th layer of hell encompassing much of the United States, it looks like the box office did well. Here is your top 5 for this past weekend
#1 Ted - (Opening Weekend $54.1M) Whoa, I had a feeling Ted would fare well, but I didn't see this coming. Then again, it has done well with the critics, it's stars Mark Wahlberg which will get the ladies in the building, Mila Kunis which will get the fellas in the building, and Seth MacFarlane is involved which will get the people who like to laugh in the building. I'm curious to see this to see how Marky Mark does in a comedy and if MacFarlane's writing can finally make him a funny character. Well, outside of Boogie Nights of course, which is probably the best example of unintentional comedy in the history of film. I'm off track, go check this movie out.
#2 Magic Mike - (Opening Weekend $39.2) Look out world, 2012 is the summer of soft core porn for women. Brown chicken, brown cow. Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, the gay guy from White Collar and some other guys getting oiled up and grinding speedo smothered junk against women who can't find men show satisfy them? Count me i..out.. I said out.. I have no idea what the plot of this movie is, so let me pull it up in another window. Ok, looks like there is none. I'm sure this should do well for another couple weeks, so ladies grab your friends and go fill up that spank bank..
#3 Brave (Week 2 $34.0M, $131.7M total) The Tough Little princess who could had another good weekend and was the most widely released movie of the weekend, showing in 4164 theaters. Brave does bring us this week's critique of the week! This one from Christopher Orr of The Atlantic (I'm not sure if that's a website, a magazine, or the ocean) "Though it falls short of the studio's best in many respects, Brave is ravishing to look at. Merida's carrot corona is alone worth the price of admission." Seriously, a grown man wrote that.
#4 Madea's Witness Protection (Opening $26.4M) Heyooooo, everyone's favorite family, the Klumps is back with their 23rd movie in the series.. What's that? That's not Eddie Murphy? Hmmm, well I'll be damned. Ok then.. I feel bad for Eugene Levy, he is a comedy genius, but continues to show up in some of the worst comedies ever written. Does 2009's Gooby ring a bell? I'll say this much, this Tyler Perry knows his audience and knows how to turn a profit.
#5 Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (Week 4 $11.8M, $180M total) So my brother went to see it this past weekend with his niece and nephew and family and I thought I'd ask his opinion, so here we go. "It was pretty funny. I mean there were some funny parts. And I fell asleep for about a half hour, but the kids seemed to like it" Not quite a certified fresh rating, but better than bad I suppose.
Other news and notes: People Like Us took in a disappointing $4.3M showing on almost 2100 screens in its opening weekend. Lukewarm reviews and a less than meager advertising budget hurt this one. Moonrise Kingdom was up to 854 theaters this weekend and took in $4.9M finishing 8th for the weekend. It was by far the best new movie I've seen this year. Sticking to the theme of new movies, especially ones I'm interested in, Beasts of the Southern Wild opened in very limited release (4 theaters). This is one I'm recommending to everyone. Go see it when it comes to your town.
