Style Does Matter in the NFL
Call me crazy, but I believe style does matter in the NFL.  True, as one of my favorite Chicago sports thinkers, Laurence Holmes, points out, 'the NFL is not College Football.'  That's true; you don't have to win by a certain number in the name of securing a higher ranking in subjective polls.

What I think Holmes misses, however, is the fact that a mediocre outing against a bad team illuminates the weakness of your team.  This has been a week of griping, complaining and gnashing of teeth in Chicago.  Bears fans are not pleased with what was deemed to be a lackluster 30-6 win against an awful Cleveland Browns team.

What do you think?  Are there 'style points' in the NFL?  In other words, are average performances against bad teams symptomatic of limitations which cannot be overcome?  I agree with Holmes that every week is a new week, but sometimes a team is showing you what they really are, and you need to be open to possible truths.  At any rate, I am fascinated by the issue.  Post your thought below.

The Bears should thank their lucky stars they won against my other favorite team the Browns. Had they lost the game, Bears fans and the Chicago media would be screaming for the OC's head! I'm concerned bout the O-Line. They can be a joke at times, and the running game is not good. If this keeps up, Kurt Warner and the Cards, are going to have an absolute field day Sunday.

is it just me, or are there more Bears articles than usual?

I don't know....as a Cowboys fan whose team barely scraped by the lowly Chiefs...I would be thrilled with a 30-6 win over any team.

Big week for the Cowboys, Rob.  So since Philly played horribly against the Raiders a few weeks ago, is that a 'red flag' against them long-term or just a bump in the road?  That was the kind of performance that causes me to question the Eagles (all year long).

Of course there are style points. When you play a sub-par team, you are expected to play at a certain level, to "dominate." When that doesn't happen and weaknesses are exposed as in the Browns game, you begin to feel a little bit of anxiety. Not because of an ugly win, but the fact that you know your team really isn't very good.

30 points by the Bears against anybody is good. They are NOT a scoring machine,c'mon. And as long as Urlacher is out there, there is a possibility that they can beat anybody. I'm a Viking fanatic, but when it's time to play the Bears, I'm always wary.

Just a bump in the road, remember sometimes the bumps are caused by the powers that B. Vegas must have made a killing . Line or no line

YOU CAN CHUCK THE STYLE POINTS OUT THE WINDOW!!!!! HOWEVER YOU GET A WIN IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE IS A GOOD WIN!  BESIDES I SEE ALOT OF TEAMS LOSE MORE GAMES THEY SHOULD OF WON THAN WIN UGLY!  BUT A WIN IS A WIN PERIOD. DOSENT MATTER HOW YOU GET IT.  THE COLTS HAVE BEEN DOIN IT FOR YEARS, SO HAVE THE STEELERS FOR THAT MATTER... THEY WON WITHOUT ANY STYLE ALL THE WAY TO THE SUPERBOWL!!!!   THINK ABOUT IT!

Style only matters for people's "Power Rankings." Winning is the only thing that really matters. But to the original point, I'm glad I'm a Saints fan and we don't have trouble winning in style :)

I agree that winning is most important, but the way in which you win or lose tells a team if they will eventually be on the field win the Saints, Vikings, Colts... etc. in January.

If there were the niners would have racked them up against Minny and Indy with how well they played in their losses and they would have lost them in droves with their close win against AZ and their blowout loss to Atl.

But I don't put much stock in style points or moral victories. Wins are all that matter, no matter how they look or feel.
