Their first draft pick had to be the start, and what a start it was, as the Red Wings drafted Steve Yzerman with the 4th pick in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.
From that first season in 1983-84, and thru 1992-93, Yzerman was one of the premier goal scorers in the NHL. All that changed when Scotty Bowman arrived as the new Red Wings coach the following year.
What followed after Bowman and Yzerman got on the same page was Detroit Red Wing, and NHL History.
This weekend, all of that hard work will culminate in Yzerman's induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Yzerman's Red Wings will get the festivities going with a Saturday night game against the Maple Leafs, in Toronto, Canada, the home of the HOF.
