The Chargers should have learned from Packers, and released LaDainian Tomlinson
The Chargers aren't taking heat for keeping LaDainian Tomlinson... but should they?
19
Rick Gosselin of the Dallas News makes a pretty solid point about the Packers and Chargers, and the way that they handled the decline of their respective future Hall of Famers.

The Packers have been criticized by some for running Brett Favre out of town a few years ago, but anyone who knows football knows that Aaron Rodgers is the better player, and the Packers definitely made the correct long-term decision.

On the other hand, the Chargers went the opposite way with RB LaDainian Tomlinson. Through the early part of his career, he was one of the best ever to take the field, but now he is showing a real decline, and the Chargers already let a capable replacement (Michael Turner) leave, and they are now stuck with an awkward situation with Tomlinson and Darren Sproles.

I realize that the situations are different, especially since Favre is about 50 years older than LT, but should the Chargers have cut ties with the fan favorite and gone with the younger player, like the Packers did?

I wouldnt say the Packers had a Super Bowl Chance if they would have kepted Farve. 2007 was a freak year based off a poor Schedule. They were 4-12 the year before which means in 2007 they played all the bottem ranked teams. Plus the way the defence played last year that teams wasnt going anywhere no matter who was behind center.

But on the topic at hand. Lt has had a rash of injuries the last few years. Which cause the sudden drop off, and it looks like he isnt going to recover from those. But yes it is time to part ways with him I think. Maybe try a trade to get something for him. But it looks like his time has passed.

The Bolts should at least let L.T. get all the way healthy before they make any career changing decisions, and the Favre reference is kind of a reach because Favre wasn't declining like L.T. is , he was coming off a conference championship loss.

I love LT......however, I love my Chargers as a whole. As much as I loved LT throughout the years, I believe it's time to let him go.

a rash of injuries? to me it seemed like he was bitching out of some games, some BIG games. (see: 2008 AFC Championship)

Sproles really doesnt resemble an every down back. I'm not sure he could take the pounding.

The Packers made a huge mistake letting Farve go. A November 1st game could prove just that.

Nah.

Favre is going to decline just like last year. They'll make the playoffs, but if they win a playoff game, it's going to be because they handed the ball to AP 30 times.

The Vikings are one hail mary (49ers) and a missed field goal (Ravens) from being .500....

If the Vikings win that game all it will prove is that the Vikings are a better team then the Packers. It doesnt prove, despite what some clueless people think, that it was the right choice to let him go in favor of Aaron Rodgers.  Saying it was the wrong move cuz they lose would be like saying, if Ryan Grant went to the Patriots and they came into Lambeau and beat the packers. OOO it was the wrong move to let Grant go cuz his new team be his old one. The Vikings win cuz everyone is always so hyped up to stop AP they slack on the Pass Coverage and Blitzes, and try to make Favre beat them. And to his credit he is having a great season. But keep it in perspective that teams are more worried about the run with the vikings then about the pass. And do we really have to say anything about the special teams and Defence, they are just a great squad.

So in short, all a win for the Vikings this weekend can prove, is that the Vikings are a better team them the Packers and that is all. In my opinion with Favre behind center in GB for the last two season. He would have had more then a shoulder injury he would have been destroyed with the punishment he would have been taking or had a outstanding number of pics. So did GB make the right choice...the answer is Hell Yes!!

no keeping LT was correct they should have different expectations though more in line with 15 carries and maybe 3-5 passess and 100-120 total yards between the 2. LT has been run hard and the chargers failed to cover that.

Nope, I love LT... The Chargers have done nothing wrong but Jack up the play calling between Marty and Norv....Also, LT has had one bad season in San Diego and he still rushed for 1,110 yards with 50 receptions. Norv tries to run LT like he's Jim Brown when LT is more like a Brian Westbrook. THROW HIM THE BALL NORV!!!

Sometimes RBs and QBs need to better respect their O-Line.  From 2002-2007 LT put in on average about  1,500 yds, 20 TDs, and 50 receptions for 500 yds receiving. That was when multiple Chargers lineman enjoyed their vacations in Hawaii vs. the NFC's best. Now, the O-Line is depleted with injuries, and they just flat out suck.

Give me better coach and a better O-Line and I guarantee LT will run for 1,500, 20 TDs, 75 Receptions again. LT still has the speed and the quickness...Now he just needs some holes to open up. He's not a Power Back like AP is. NORV needs to adjust his play calls to LT's skills

WHAT?! u alkin bout hands downn he best running back n the league n u wanna get rid of him? everybody has bad seasons but gettin rid of LT would have been the dumbest thing the chargers could have done lol the packers should have gotten rid of favre i mean the man is 100 years old n the packers needed a breath of fresh air anyway n they had no shot at a super bowl cause regardless of ya QB u gotta have an O-Line that can block for him period

thank u somebody has some sense lol all a win for the vikings shows u is that the vikings are the better team which they are they got a better D a better O-Line i mean they whole team is jus better than the packers thats y they didn't want farve too go there too begin with cause they knew that the vikings were a QB away  from being a playoff contending team

They did the right thing by keeping him instead of getting nothing in return for him. If they could have traded him and got something back, then that's the move to make. But to just let him walk? Nope, they should have kept him.

the chargers might let lt just sit out a few games because the record right now but have darren sproles start and have lt every once and a while

A big Charger fan here and while I will agree that LT skills have declined, however I do think the biggest thing that really hurt LT was getting rid of Full Back Lerenzo Neil.  LT has never been the same since.  Hester and Tobert just cant open the holes like Lerenzo Neil could.  Plus will agree the play calling is more geared to the pass and Norv abandons the run too quickly.
I think if they could get the line healthy and get a true full back to block for LT he would be producing a lot more yards and TD's. This is most apparent in the red zone as there really has been no run attack and our line is getting pushed around.
