The Colts may ask "Who are Those Guys?"
READ MORE:
The Colts have taken the Texans’ lunch money since they entered the league in 2002, but my, how things have changed. Looking back at last season’s 33-27 Texans loss at Indianapolis reveals the Texans have whipped up some big changes in their starting lineup since that time.

On offense, 4 of the 11 Texans starters will be different. Last year’s starting QB (due to injury) was Sage Rosenfels, who was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in the off-season. Two of the starters on the OL, Chester Pitts and Mike Brisiel, have been lost to injury this year, along with starting TE Owen Daniels. I suppose the only “cherry on top” from these changes is the fact that Schaub, not Rosenfels, will start at QB. But don’t push away from the table with an empty feeling just yet.

When we switch to comparing this year’s starting Texans defense to last year’s, we see the real meat-and-potatoes differences. Looking at the starting DL alone, you’ll notice 3 of the 4 starters against the Colts will be new to the menu. Anthony Weaver and Earl Cochran are out of the NFL, and Travis Johnson has yet to be a key ingredient with the San Diego Chargers this season. Xavier Adibi has gone from starting Texans LB to backup, and Petey Faggins, who started at the nickel spot, is now a reserve with (gulp!) the Detroit Lions. And, as much acid reflux as it causes to even mention this, the defensive coordinator was Richard Smith.

Let’s see if a few culinary calculations can help us rinse away that bad taste in our mouths. Begin with subtracting Richard Smith, Anthony Weaver, Earl Cochran, Travis Johnson, and Petey Faggins. (Feeling better already?) Now, add Frank Bush at DC, with Brian Cushing and Antonio Smith in the front 7. Stir Bernard Pollard and Glover Quinn into the starting mix in the secondary, and the Texans defense has been spiced up considerably since the last time they travelled to Indy.

Will all of this allow the Texans to serve the Colts their first loss this season? I don’t know, but here’s hoping the Texans go after the Colts with everything, including the kitchen sink, and that they walk away only after putting the icing on the cake with a victory!

Matt Schaub is quickly develping into an elite QB. And the combo of Schaub to Andre Johnson is one of the leagues best pass n catch duos. Problem for the Texans is they play the BEST QB in the league and an equally formidable duo in Manning to Wayne. Colts D is better than the Texans and the Colts offense is better than the Texans. Both should be evident on Sunday. Texans are improved YES.....improved enough to take down the leagues best team.....NO.

Just curious here, definitely not cocky ,since I think the Colts hold a 13-1 record vs. my guys...I've said I'm not going to "bet the farm" on the Texans winning this game, but that I will indeed let my heart do the talking this time and bet on them since I think they have the best chance they've ever had to win in Indy.  Are you any "less confident" this year, compared to others, that the Colts will prevail?

Please don't think I'm trying to sway your answer; a true Colts fan wouldn't let this anyway, but...I've developed grudges (on behalf of my Texans) against both the Titans and Jags. Never been able to do that against the Colts, though, because of my admiration for Manning and Dungy. Not that I won't be happy as heck, though, when we finally start really competing with you guys. As a Texans fan, I have to admit that I have hope for this year!  So, anyway...

I would be curious to know which team's defense had the most 3-and-outs against the other team's offense.  I would not at all be surprised if it was Houston.   If I'm not mistaken, one of the CBS guys calling the game said that Houston's D leads the league in that category.

We came within a missed field goal of sending this game inot overtime.  That tells me we compete pretty well with Indy.   Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, right?   I guarantee you that Peyton Manning, et. al., feel pretty darn lucky today.

That being said, it's of no value whatsoever to me, as a Texans fan.   Moral victories do not ever count in anything.  It's Ws and Ls, not Ws, Ls, and Ms.

It is extrememely difficult to not like Peyton Manning.  He's got gifted game and ability, and he's a humble, unassuming man.  Everytime he's interviewed about breaking this record or that record, he always says something to the effect of "I feel humbled just to be mentioned in the same breath with those guy(the player or players whose record he broke)".    I like Peyton Manning.   He and Schaub matched each other toe-to-toe yesterday, right down to the 2 interceptions.   It will be a very interesting game in a few weeks in Houston.

Sherry,

It's a moot point now, but you never really answered Jan's question about being less confident about this game than others ....

Leonard.... In Sunday's Colts / Texans game here were the numbers:

Schaub & the Texans 3 and outs..... 4 (they also had 1 drive which they were intercepted on the 1st play of the drive)

Manning & the Colts 3 and outs..... 2

Total Yds on the game...... Houston 377,  Indy 426

You are correct on a couple of accounts. YES the Texans had the best 3 and out percentage in the league going into this weeks games. And YES, the game in Houston will be very interesting and should be very competitive. And YES, Im sure the Colts feel fortunate to have walked out with a W yesterday. Both teams had chances that they did not capitilize on. The Colts squandered 3 trips into the redzone only coming away with 6 pts on those 3 possessions (not to mention the Reggie Wayne pass for an interception.... not sure where that play came from and hope we NEVER see it again) and the Texans had the unfortunate fumble by Moats at the 2 yd line when it looked like the Texans were about to put 7 pts on the board (Not to mention the uncharicteristic missed FG at the end of the game).
I am in no way disrespecting the Texans. In fact, before the season... I predicted the Texans to finish second in the division with a 10-6 record and make the playoffs as a WildCard team. I was shocked during Week 1 when the Texans got their hats handed to them at home by the Jets 24-7 and figured it was just a fluke and the Texans would recover and still be a threat to make the playoffs.

Gary- Thanks for the response. I didn't mean to imply that you were disrespecting Houston, and I hope you didn't take it that way. It's extremely frustrating for a game such as that, when we're playing a division foe and one of the few teams that every team in the league uses as a measuring stick for their progress as a team, and come so close. The Colts are a great team, and like I mentioned, it's just very hard not to like them. Soon I hope, Houston will be where they are. Good luck to your team (but not too much, LOL).

No animosity here Leonard. I know how it feels. I used to feel that way about 10 yrs ago when the Colts were an up and coming team and just couldn't seem to beat the Dolphins when we were still in the AFC EAST. I still remember our first win in Miami.
The Texans are a VERY good young team. They have solid players that hopefully they will be able to hang on to. Matt Schaub is an excellent QB, WR Andre Johnson is unstoppable, I think their RB's are extremely underrated, their run defense is solid, their linebackers are very solid and they have a great CB in Dante Robinson who did a heck of a job on Reggie Wayne yesterday.
I wish the Texans, and you and the Houston fans, all the best (just not when we come to town..... hope you understand... LOL).
