The Dream Team vs. The Redeem Team, Who Wins?

The Dream Team vs. The Redeem Team, Who Wins? Photo

With the Redeem Team bringing back the Gold Medal and restoring order in the Basketball universe this past weekend, it got me and I am sure a lot of you thinking, could the Redeem Team hang with the Dream Team?

First thought is, "Of course not. That team had Jordan, Bird, Magic, and Barkley. They dominated everyone."

After giving it some more thought though, the Dream Team had no where near as difficult of competition to go up against as the Redeem Team did, and the Redeem Team blew everyone out except Spain in the gold medal game. The Redeem Team also is a more athletic team than even the Dream Team. The Dream Team would have a hard time keeping them from running. I would also argue that the Redeem Team is a better defensive team. The Dream Team may have held their opponents to fewer points but, for example, the Angola of 1992 and the Angola of 2008 are no where near the same team.

Chris Sheridan made a great chart comparing the two teams team statistics:

Dream Team vs. Redeem Team
  1992 2008
W-L 8-0 8-0
PPG 117.3 106.3
Opponent PPG 73.5 78.4
PPG differential +43.8 +27.9
FG pct 57.8 55.0
Opponent FG pct 36.5 40.3
3-pt FG pct 40.0 37.7
Opponent 3-pt pct 30.5 29.9
FT pct 72.6 68.0
RPG differential +13.5 +5.6
Assists per game 29.9 18.8
Steals per game 22.1 12.5
Blocks per game 5.9 3.9

Based on those numbers you would say that the Dream Team is far more dominant, but I would say that those teams look pretty even when you factor in the talent of the competition.

This is good and all but at the end of the day, this is just a fun bar discussion because the teams themselves could never play.

Well with the help of the WhatIfSports.com, I made the Dream Team vs the Redeem Team matchup and simulated a 7 game series between the two teams.

The Dream Team won the series 4 games to 1.
  • Game 1 was a close one with the Dream Team winning 110-108. The Dream Team used a very balanced attack to pull out the 2 point win. Larry Bird led the way with 20, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson added 16 apiece. Kobe led the way with 18 for the Redeem Team.
  • The Redeem Team used a 74 point second half to win Game 2 115-105. LeBron had 23, Carmelo added 20, and Dwayne Wade chipped in with 17. Jordan scored 25, Barkley had 24, and Magic added 19. No other Dream Teamer scored in double figures.
  • Game 3 was another tight one, but the Dream Team won the 4th quarter by 7 to take game 3 110-108. Kobe had a huge game, scoring 34 points but the Dream Team's balanced attack of Jordan (20), Magic (19), Barkley (18), and Bird (12) closed the door to give the Dream Team the 2-1 series lead.
  • The Dream Team flexed their muscles in game 4 to the tune of a 116-105 victory. Michael, Magic, and Larry led the way once again as the Dream Team lead by 21 going into the 4th quarter.
  • The Dream Team closed out the series in dominant fashion with a 111-99 victory over the Redeem Team. Michael Jordan showed why he is the greatest closer in the history of the game by scoring 31 points while Patrick Ewing added a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
So there you have it. In a fantasy matchup of the Dream Team vs. the Redeem Team, the Dream Team shows that it's the most dominant team ever assembled. If you are wondering about the individual statistics or box scores for each game, click that link and you can check out how dominant Jordan, Magic, and Barkley really were.

+1 thumbs upGreat article!  While watching this game the other night with my 15 year old son, he turned to me during the late 4Th quarter and asked me, who would win between this team and the dream team.   Perhaps out of nostalgia and my own bias I quickly replied.... without a doubt, the dream team would blow these guys away.    During the summer Olympics of 1992, Michael, Magic, Larry and Charles had their warm ups on by the start of the 4Th quarter.  Consider the fact that David Robinson, Chris Mullins, Clyde the glide, Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone and John Stockton were the bench players.  Perhaps you could say that Magic and Bird were beyond their prime, and they were, but Barkley, Jordan, Malone, Ewing, etc...were all just hitting their prime, and at the very top of their respective games.  Jordan was all defensive player many of his years in the league, and would of easily shut down Kobe.  I would have to say that the only player that could of matched up with one dream teamer would be Jason Kidd vs. John Stockton, and that would be pushing it.

Granted, some of the guys on the 2008 team have yet to hit their prime, and the jury is still out on what types of players they will be.  LeBron and Dwight Howard have the abilities to be some of the greats, along with Chris Paul, Dwayne Wade and Deron Williams.  Its still too early to tell.  Kobe is in his prime, and would be the only player on the current roster that you could even justify saying that he could easily make the 92 dream team roster.

One last thing, during the 1992 Olympics, the dream team started out beating teams so bad, that many people started discussing the notion of them trying to keep the games close, just to make for a more interesting game for viewers to watch.  Whether that truly happened, I don't know for sure... and would have a hard time believing those guys would do that, simply due to their competitive nature.  Sure the rest of the world has gotten much, much better at the game of basketball, and the competition is tougher.... but there is only 1 reason for this.... the 1992 USA Dream Team.

+1 thumbs upThis has to stop. It's incredulous to consider the idea.

Numbers say one thing, but the whole crux of this argument is based on "The competition is better now"... No, it's not. There are just as many cake walks now as then. The U.S.S.R. was getting split up as was Yugoslavia, but there was some great international competition - Arvydas Sabonis, Drazen Petrovic, Sarunas Marcioertweytiyuoieotrlonus, et al...

Dream team had  - not just Hall of Famers - LEGENDS on it's roster - players who changed the game! Not just A player or two, but PLAYERS

Let's see... Who DIDN'T make the '92 team? Isiah Thomas, Reggie Miller, Kevin Johnson, Joe Dumars, Dominique Wilkins or James Worthy - ALL players who are or are going to be Hall of Famers

Who else DIDN'T make the cut? Larry Johnson, Larry Nance, Brad Daugherty, Ricky Pierce, Alvin Robertson, Dennis Rodman, Mark Price, Tom Chambers, Tim Hardaway, Sean Elliot, Shawn Kemp, Dan Majerle or then-collegiate players Shaquille O'Neal and Alonzo Mourning.

Take the guys I just mentioned and they'd give the "Redeem team" a seven game series AT WORST!

+2 thumbs upShoot.........you beat me to the punch !      I actually did a little checking to see if the 'Dream Team 2' (ie - players from '92 that didn't make the team) might beat the 'Redeem Team'.   My team consisted of:

Centers:   Brad Daughtery, DIkembe Mutombo
Power Forwards:  Larry Nance, Dennis Rodman
Small Forwards:  Dominique WIlkins, James Worthy, Reggie Lewis (F/G)
Point Guards:  Isiah Thomas, Tim Hardaway
Shooting Guards:  Reggie Miller, Joe Dumars
Collegiate Player - Shaquille O'Neal

Heck, the "3rd Team" for the '92 Dream Team wasn't half bad either !!

Centers:  Kevin Willis, Rony Seikaly
Power Forwards:  Shawn Kemp, Buck Williams
Small Forwards:  Tom Chambers, Sean Elliott
Point Guards:  Kevin Johnson, Mark Price
Shooting Guards:  Alvin Robertson, Jeff Malone, Rolando Blackman
Collegiate Player - Alonzo Mourning

Then still left over are players like:  Mark Jackson, Sam Perkins, Horace Grant, Jerome Kersey, Hersey Hawkins, Kendall Gill, Otis Thorpe, Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, Ron Harper, Danny Manning, Terry Porter, Dan Majerle, Jeff Hornacek, Gary Payton, Larry Johnson, Glenn Rice, Charles Oakley, A.C. Green, Ricky Pierce, Chuck Person, Pervis Ellison, Michael Cage, Derrick Coleman, Vernon Maxwell, Dale Ellis, Greg 'Cadillac' Anderson, Michael Adams, Kenny Smith, Mugsey Bouges, Rod Strickland, Nate McMillan, Michael Williams, Stacey Augmon, Steve Smith, Billy Owens, John Paxson, Terry Cummings, John Salley, Danny Ainge, Gary Grant , John Starks, and many, many others.

Great debate !!

+1 thumbs upReggie Miller said on the Dan Patrick show last week that he think the Redeem Team couldn't beat his 1996 "Dream Team". That got me thinking that 1996's team was loaded too.

Charles Barkley
Anfernee Hardaway
Grant Hill
Hakeem Olajuwon
Karl Malone
Reggie Miller
Shaquille O'Neal
Gary Payton
Scottie Pippen
Mitch Richmond
David Robinson
John Stockton

That team was pretty loaded too. I really think that 2004 really clouded a lot of our vision of how great we use to be in international play. I mean we all remembered how great they were, but that 2004 team was fresher in our memories.

Why is that a bunch of bs? Because I don't just write something and then respond to what is being said? I wrote it because I thought it would be a great discussion, not so I could watch others discuss it. I also never said in the article that the Redeem Team would win the 7 game series.

I think the Redeem Team is a much more athletic team and would give them their monies worth for as many games as it would take. You gotta remember, that summer games was the Summer after Magic had already retired, Bird was on his last leg and had a bad back, and yes Jordan and Barkley were at their best but that still doesn't mean that the Dream Team would just run the Redeem Team out the gym in 4 games and it would be foolish to think that.

Obviously correct grammar doesn't come with age.

I am still confused where you are coming from with this. Good for you remembering the Olympics, so do I. I have been an basketball fan since before I can even remember and I probably have forgotten more about basketball than you know so it is all good.

Just trying to see where you are coming from with your baseless claim of bs on me.
