The Memphis Tiger Basketball Program Has Been Charged By The NCAA With Major Violations During The 2007-08 Season
This Might Be The Least Surprising News Of The Week
READ MORE:

The Memphis Commercial Appeal is reporting that the NCAA is going to charge the Memphis men's basketball program with a Major Violation.

The allegations include "knowing fraudulence or misconduct" on an SAT exam by a player on the 2007-08 team. The wording of the report indicates the player in question only competed during the 2007-08 season and the 2008 NCAA tournament. The player's name was redacted in the report due to privacy laws.

Doing my own investigating that player is more than likely Derrick Rose since he was the only one year player that year.

As a college coach, you have to have some idea of your player's eligibility and tutors, etc., so they play. To say Cal's not culpable at all is a joke. Of course he is.

The article clearly says that the player cheated on his exams and John Calipari is not named in the report.  Is Calipari's picture next to this article just for good measure?

Take a good look UK fans, this is what awaits you some day.

Agreed.  Apparently even though he's gone he's still the face of Memphis hoops.  As for the Vandal last I REMEMBER (don't quote me on this) I don't recall any major sanctions or fines put down on Cal while he was at those schools.

Calipari was the head coach of the team during that season. You are telling me he had no idea this was going on?

It is also alleged that Memphis provided $2,260 in free travel to road games for an associate of a player, The Commercial Appeal reported. The NCAA is charging Memphis with a failure to monitor.

What about that part?

No but he should know about the scores and grades that his player did or didn't receive.

UMass had to vacate it's '96 Final Four appearance after Camby was found to have taken money... He slips by un punished but leaves a huge mess wherever he goes.

if u investigated all the schools i bet you come up wit alot of violations for every school, its never a problem till someone get caught. if you dont think its goin on at ur school it is they jus havent been busted yet.

That's a bit ignorant all he needs to know is if they are eligible, coaches who CARE like Bobby Knight care about all that.  I'm sure Bobby Bowden doesn't give an F about his players tests.

Good point been happening for years and happens EVERY WHERE.  Kids cheat in school ALL the time that's why there's a plagerism rule.

Once again, I know a coach can notice and what not but what can you do once a player takes money?  Kick'em off the team?  He's still going to play somewhere and still make it into the NBA.

Well I meant that as like at the very least they should know that.

Yeah but knowing a grade doesn't mean u know what they are doing really outside of what is reported back.  Is all I'm saying and most coaches in high profile schools for sports don't care.  If these organizations were ran like *wait for it.... ..... .....* NOTRE DAME and put academics as highly important or Ivy League schools then this wouldn't happen.  Let players who want to just ball go overseas, lower pro leagues, or to the NBA then just be a money hog in the college ranks.

sure but the school is left to face the music while the guilty parties move forward without any repercussions.

How do you think new coach Josh Pastner feels having to work under the penalties Cal earned and deserves?

flawed logic... of course people get away with it. That doesn't mean you let those you do catch off scott free does it?

I'm not wasting my time speculating about what he knew and didn't know three years ago.  Neither one of us know anything about what went on, but after reading the article it's obvious that Calipari is not being accused of any wrongdoing, so I thought your post was a little misleading.

We'll see how it all turns out.   From what I've heard, it looks like only minor penalties will be handed down by the NCAA to Memphis; an unfortunate beginning for Memphis' new head basketball coach, Josh Pastner.

First I'd like to know what penalties are given to Memphis, and I'd also like to know that some real evidence of wrongdoing on Calipari's part before I blame him for anything.  But the facts that you are so conveniently ignoring is that nothing's been proven and Calipari is not even named in that report.  Who knows, maybe Pastner payed for that player's "associate" to travel to road games out of his own pocket!  He was the assistant coach then, so wasn't this allegedly going on during his watch too?

Haha! Like the NCAA needs proof to penalize programs...

That's 1. the schools fault for hiring a guy like that... 2. they aren't going to do anything to the guy cause it's like someone commiting a crime under an umbrella of an organization they get busted... and the little people suffer i.e. Enron.

This would have been really huge if Memphis had won the title.

Dude, you should stick to sports you know something about.  Of course they need proof to impose penalties.  That's why they conduct full investigations whenever any allegations are made.

Here's a link to how the NCAA enforcment process works.

Dan Wolken stated that the party of interest is Derrick Rose's brother flying on Memphis team charters and not reinbursing the school for the discount it is legal to receive. So you can fly cheap, but you have to pay it back which he didn't. If you are Coach Cal, and there's a players brother on your team charter, I think I would make damn sure he pays it back. Looks like the Memphis Final 4 banner will be coming down just like UMass's and UK's some day too.

who cares? Rose is long gone and so is Coach Cal.. so the kid can't pass the SAT, oh well that's why he was born to play basketball

Yeah, if you call forfeting 38 wins and a Final Four appearance minor... then yeah, I guess that's minor.

Funny thing about Cal, both schools he's coached at have had to forefit their Final Four appearances (Memphis hasn't yet, but I'm sure they will).

So when he does the same thing at UK, you'll be able to sit there and say "Well, it wasn't Cal's fault." And you might be right, perhaps it won't be his "fault". But yet, it will still have happened and there will still be a horrible stench on the program that will be very hard to get rid of.

Deadspin has a good article on this topic too... in case you wanna check it out...

deadspin.com/5271826/memphis-accused-of-major-recruiting-violation

Kinda makes that Duke issue of "accidently" sending an assistant coach to see a HS recruit play during a "dead period" pale by comparison.

READ IT AND WEEP CALIPARI HATERS!  http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4210798&campaign=rss&source=NCBHeadlines

CAL IS NOT AT RISK WITH BEING CHARGED WITH ANY NCAA VIOLATIONS!! THAT'S IT! CASE CLOSED!  SORRY MEMPHIS FANS!  THE BEEF IS BETWEEN THE NCAA AND YOUR UNIVERSITY, NOT YOUR EX-COACH.

I'm done getting all worked up over nothing.  I'll be glad when this all goes away and Calipari can get down to winning Kentucky 38 games next year.

I'll leave you with this thought- With this many eyes on Calipari's every move plus a pending NCAA violation investigation at his former school, you really think he cheated to get John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, and Darnell Dodson (one of the best recruiting classes ever assembled).  If he aint cheating right now, then he'll NEVER have to cheat in order to get the biggest of stars to come to UK.  If I'm wrong, I'm wrong and I'll eat my words along with my pride, but I still think he's the best guy for the job right now.  And you cannot prove he's not.

Sounds like a job for the accounting department, not the head coach.

He also got all those guys to come to UK before they knew he was under any kind of investigation at Memphis as we all found out this week. If Pitino had taken the Kings job and Calipari had taken these guys to the 'Ville, you'd be leading the lynch mob to get him.

I see we have another expert on my actions.  You're wrong.  I would keep my mouth shut until I knew something concrete.  If and when there was actual evidence presented that implicated him, then and only then would I gather up the posse to lynch Cal.  Trying to argue about what I would do is not one you'll ever win.  My advice to you is-Let it go- Calipari is gone to a better place now!! You've got to move on with Josh Pastner.  It will all be fine in a couple years for Memphis, and they will once again enjoy beating up on the weakest major conference in the NCAA.

Umm... yeah, you'd keep your mouth shut until you knew something concrete. Yep, based on all your posts I've read before I have to say that's exactly what I'd think you'd do.

Just for your info Pastner has only been at Memphis for the 2008-2009 season,he wasn't here when Rose played,
