The Red Sox should consider trading Josh Beckett
Is it time for the Red Sox to consider trading Josh Beckett?
19
It's hard to think about the idea of a perennial contender trading away a guy who has been known as their most consistent pitcher over the past 4 seasons, but Dave D'Onofrio of the Concord Monitor makes that case. He makes the case that Beckett is a bit overrated throughout baseball, and that he's not the ace that people make him out to be.

The numbers back him up, for the most part. Despite a couple incredible seasons and outstanding postseasons, Beckett's overall numbers are far from spectacular. This year, it became clear that Jon Lester was starting to take over the role of the Sox' ace. Is it time to consider getting as much value as you can, from a guy like Beckett?

My take is this: You trade Beckett, but only if you can turn around and make a deal for someone like Felix Hernandez. It's conceivable that the Sox could trade Beckett for some solid prospects and then turn those around and send them to Seattle along with perhaps guys like Michael Bowden or Lars Anderson, for Hernandez. If they could make that happen, then I'd be all for it. Otherwise, keep Beckett.

I agree that he hasnt been the ace he was suppose to be.  However, with his contract they theyd be trading low for him.  Everyone else can see his numbers too.  Given what pitchers are getting for contracts today, $10mil to keep Beckett is a bargain and hes only 29.

 NO
Why would you ever trade him he has been there ace
if they could get a guy like hernadezen then maybe
but i don't like taking young prospects just looking to MAYBE make another deal
So no unless it directly for hernadez then maybe i coudl go for it
But knowing there GM i think we could still see becket of the redsox roster next season

NO it's not time to trade Beckett or Papelbon. It would be great to add Cliff Lee to our pitching roster though. There are some we do need to get rid of. In my opinion it would be great to have these guys on our pitching rotation - Beckett, Lester, Buchholz, Wakefield, Saito, Matsuzaka, Lee (from the Philly's), Bard. Papelbon, Okajima and maybe Masterson, I don't remember at the moment how good or bad he was.

HELL NO!!!...WHY WOULD YOU TRADE ONE OF THE BEST PITCHERS IN YOUR ROTATION....IF THEY TRADE BECKETT THAT WILL BE THE SECOND WORSE MOVE THEY WILL HAVE EVER MADE!!...(FIRST BEING WHEN THEY SOLD!!! BABE RUTH!)....I THINK THEY NEED TO THINK LONG AND I MEAN LOOOOOOOOOOONG ABOUT THEIR DECISION....!

For starters, no. Just no. You don't even know what they would get in return, but even if they got a few Louisville Sluggers and a bag of baseballs, it still wouldn't belong in the same conversation as the Ruth deal.

Also, trading a 29-year old pitcher wouldn't even be CLOSE to as bad as when they traded Jeff Bagwell.

I'm not saying trading him would be a great move, but if they can figure out a way to parlay it into getting Felix Hernandez, who is already better, and is 6 years younger, then it's a great move. Fact.

Hell NO!!!! I think that he is to important to the team...I think that they need to figure out some other way to get us back to the play offs...honestly I m not sure exactly that can be done...but getting rid off Beckett isnt the answer!!!!!

Keep Beckett, lose Bay and Ortiz. The pitching was not the fault of the Red Sox but rather the lack of offense production. The pitching staff is young enough and some, including Beckett, are entering their prime. Bay was in a funk after his 2 month domination, MLB Triple Play numbers, let him go and Ortiz showed that he has enough gas in the tank to have 3 more years of production but let's face it... no Manny batting front of him showed why Minnesota was so willing to part with him in the first place. Clear cap room or get talent from those 2 players before touching th staff

There's no way that Ortiz can be moved. If the Sox trade him, they'll get very little in return, and they'll probably have to pick up most of his salary. So that would be pointless. Bay is obviously a free agent, and they can let him walk, but then they'll need a new left fielder. In the current market, there aren't many guys that they could get to replace him. I wish it were as easy as it sounds, but it's not.

The point would not be to trade Beckett for Felix Hernandez. Obviously, the Mariners are not in the position to make that work for them. They're not looking to take on that kind of contract, especially since he's a free agent after 2010. The point would be to trade Beckett somewhere else for prospects, and then trade those prospects (and most likely additional ones) to the Mariners for Hernandez.

If you're going to leave inflammatory comments like this, please at least attempt to read the article first, and then comment intelligently, instead of just skimming it and taking it completely out of context.

And also, there's no need to say "Copyright - Riley James". When you say something, the general assumption is that the thoughts contained therein are yours. You only need to cite a source when you take someone else's words... like when you post an entire blog post with stuff that you copied and pasted from another website, and then you add a sentence or two at the end. That is something that you'd need to cite sources for. You're welcome.

I think trading Beckett makes sense.  Just making the playoffs is not good enough for this franchise anymore, so if they get value in return, it seems worth the risk.

It's not an issue of copyright. It's an issue of the site rules, and simple courtesy. If you use information from another source, you cite that source. Those are the FanIQ rules, regardless of whose permission you have elsewhere. I am the editor on this site, it is part of my responsibility to make sure that blog posts are within the appropriate guidelines.

This has nothing to do with you, and it's laughable that you think anyone is "after you". Cite your sources, write blogs with your own words, and there's no issue. When you are copying and basting directly from another site, it is not inflammatory for me to call it plagiarism... it is factual. I'm not being a phony, I'm being 100% up front and honest about it.

And for future reference, if you hijack a sports thread again with your personal issues, and I'll delete those comments too. Now you know.

I'm sure a team will not only try to get Ortiz but pick up his salary as well... and that team could possibly be the other Sox team! Chicago!
