The Top 10 toughest nonconference schedules in college football for 2009.
A possible chink in the Trojan armor? The Top 10 toughest nonconference schedules in college football for 2009.
ESPN's Bruce Feldman ranks college football's Top 10 nonconference schedules for the upcoming season.  While the USC Trojans face formidable San Jose State, BCS contender Ohio State, and a much-improved Notre Dame, there are 2 teams ranked above them with tougher nonconference opponents.

The Top 10 toughest nonconference schedules are:

1) Florida International Golden Panthers
2) Miami (OH) Red Hawks
3) USC Trojans
4) Florida State Seminoles
5) Oregon Ducks
6) East Carolina Pirates
7) Virginia Tech Hokies
8) San Jose State Spartans (tie)
9) Fresno State Bulldogs (tie)
10) Georgia Bulldogs

What are your thoughts, and which nonconference matchups are you most looking forward to?

I think these stats lie a bit, because FIU and Miami (Ohio) only have tough schedules to get big paydays for their athetic programs.  USC has taken on these games to actually win them.

Florida International finally beat someone at something. They couldn't beat Miami (FL) in a fight, but they sure can beat USC in the toughest non-conference schedule department.

This reminds me, I need to make my predictions and preseason 120 for the season.

Ohio State never has a tough schedule hence why they always lose in their bowl game cause they have to play a team that is actually worth a damn....Michigan is the only other real formidable team to me...you get others in the Big 10 from year to year that contend but never really amount to anything over a substantial amount of years

VaTech and Alabama should be a hell of a meeting to start their seasons.

The first weekend of the season features 5 of the best non conference matchups for the whole year.  Oregon/Boise State, Georgia/Oklahoma State, Alabama/Virginia Tech, Miami/Florida State and of course, the border war between Missouri/Illinois

Some teams have really hard non-conference schedule because they are bad teams. It is all relative.

There is only 1 reason espn did this
USC
these are non conference games
post the total schedule
as weak as the Pac 10 is
USC aint there
your total schedule will determine the MNC
all this is is an effort to pub USC in the press to put them in political position to win it all

I wish Mark May and ESPN would stop having sxe with Pete Carroll and USC and Kobe for that matter

all this is is unfounded hype

A lot of Georgia fans keep complaining about them scheduling hard teams this year. It drives me nuts. All major schools should have tough schedules like that. Playing cupcakes is what frustrates me so much about college football, aside from the lack of a playoff

here are the facts

1 - FIU - Alabama, Rutgers, Toledo and Florida
2 - Miami (OH) - Kentucky, Boise St, Kent St, & Northwestern
3 - USC - San Jose St ???, @ Ohio State & @ Notre Dame
4 - Fla St - Jacksonville St, BYU, South Florida & Florida - (you play a D1-AA school with the exception of App State, toughest schedule gets thrown out the window, don't care who you are and who else is on the schedule)
5 - Oregon - Boise St, Purdue, & Utah
6 - ECU - App State, West Virginia, North Carolina, & Virginia Tech (Play a D1-AA school, but App State excemption.)
7 - Virginia Tech - Alabama, Marshall, Nebraska & ECU
8 - SJSU - USC, Utah, Stanford & Cal Poly (D1-AA school that isn't App State...sorry)
9 - Fresno - UC Davis, Wisconsin, Cincinnati & Illinois (D1-AA School that isn't App State...sorry)
10 - UGA - Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Tennessee Tech and Georgia Tech (D1-AA School that isn't App State...sorry)

Cal-Poly is better than you think; they gave Wisconsin fits last year.  Appalachian State is likely not the best team in 1-AA/FCS this year, the CAA has overtaken the Southern Conference, Richmond may repeat and JMU is very good, Maine is a threat, South Carolina State is loaded, Elon and Wofford have a solid chance at winning the SoCon, Northern Iowa, SDSU and SIU are dark horses but could contend for the championship.

No doubt.  Cal-Poly should have won that game against the Badgers (in Madison).  Their field goal kicker missed 3 extra points or they would have won.

I sense some Hate old man. Its ok, I feel the same way hearing someone cry about my team cause were always over rated which some times is true. But thats not the point I get tired of hereing it as well. However  we don't know how good Trojan team is. Personally I know a lot about SC football and I don't know if this teams good enough 2 win a Title but stranger things have happened. As far as Kobe he just got a title, you can't be that mad at ESPN for getting it right but also falling a Lebron short.  I will leave on this, there would be no argument if we had playoffs which will never happen. So the battle continues!!!!!!!!!!!

If we're not going to have Playoffs they should make all the best teams in each Conference play each other in NonConference games.

Just want to remind you, sometimes teams back out at the last second: It's happened to Florida State and this year it happened to South Florida. In both cases the schools that dropped out because of the escape clause did so at the BEGINNING of the year they were to play. When you have an open date, ANY AD of ANY D1school is going to get WHOEVER he can to replace that revenue lost.
To sit there and denigrate FSU's and ESPECIALLY Georgia's schedule is close minded. Georgia doesn't have to schedule teams like that and yet they do...you should be applauding one of the only elite SEC teams that does that.

Maybe but its still a USC love fest
SJS? are u kidding
ok OSU is good
ND? get real

and USC has the 3rd toughest?
1 good game

all ESPN is doing is getting the word out that USC has it tough
to get their perceived ranking up
so IF USC wins them all they are a lock to be in
They don't want anything to get in the way like OU being socially promoted over UT
last year to happen to the Trojans and how the Trojans could have been in that game too last year

I figure it will be USC-FLA or USC and an SEC team in the MNC game

its all about rankings
1 or 2
everything else is just jack
ESPN helps USC about like the media helps Barry

I'm sure that will get PQed
