The draw is complete and we now know where the US will go and what they’ll have to go through to advance in the World Cup.
The USA was put in pool 2 and was drawn against England, who is the #1 seed in the group. The USA was fairly lucky in the draw as Algeria and Slovenia were drawn into the group. Given the other choices (Cameroon, Chile, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Paraguay, Uruguay or Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland) the US ended up with likely the best draw they could have gotten. Switzerland instead of Slovenia might have been nice, but I’ll take it as will most US fans.
Mexico seemed to be in the sweet spot, as they were drawn as the #2 team in the South Africa group because South Africa is easily the weakest of the top 8 seeds. However, joining Mexico and South Africa are Uruguay and France. I can tell you, I’d much rather face Algeria and Slovenia than Uruguay and France.
Most people thought that Brazil was automatically into the next round when North Korea was drawn as the #2 team in their group. However, that quickly turned as Ivory Coast (the dark horse to win and one of the best teams in Africa) and Portugal were drawn as the #3 and #4 teams in the Brazil group. Most will say that this is the group of death this year.
Here is the complete breakdown:
All in all, a pretty even draw with some very exciting matchups. The US will play England on Saturday, 6/12 at 2:30 PM EST. Then the US will face Slovenia on Friday, 6/18 at 10:00 AM EST and will have their last group game against Algeria on Wednesday, 6/23 at 10:00 AM EST.
If you look at the FIFA rankings, England is #9, USA is #14, Algeria is #28 and Slovenia is #33. Not a cakewalk, but certainly the USA will have a shot at getting out of the group.
So who do you like? Who do you think can win an upset? Who do you think got the worst draw?
It’s here folks! Time to break down the World Cup and pick your winners!
