Thomas Boswell: Master of the Obvious

Thomas Boswell: Master of the Obvious Photo

Boswell goes out on a limb in today's Washington Post to proclaim that Greg Maddux is the best righthanded pitcher of his era.  This might have been a bold article to write two years ago, before the Mitchell Report or Clemens' 2007 season.  Not so bold on May 10, 2008.

My prediction for his column tomorrow:  Barack Obama will win the Democratic Nomination.

Maddux was the best pitcher of his era before the Mitchell Report came out.  No need to specify right-handed either.

From an article published when Maddux was included in the All-Century Team at the end of 1999:

"Leading the majors in victories during the 1990s... Ranked in the NL's top 10 in victories everyseason since 1988 (third-longest streak in history)... From 1992-1997, the NL ERA was 4.08; Maddux's ERA was 2.15--47.2% lower, the largest ever such gap over a seven-year span, with HOFer Walter Johnson second. In spans from 2 to 11 years, Johnson and Maddux place second and/or first each time... 4 Cy Youngs, 4 ERA titles, 7 All-Star Games, 9 Gold Gloves..."

The article concludes that Maddux is probably the greatest pitcher of the live-ball era.
