Tony La Russa denies knowing about Mark McGwire's steroid use

At this point, we all know that Mark McGwire was taking steroids both in Oakland and St Louis. His manager in both spots was Tony La Russa, and most reasonable folks think that Tony, at the very least, knew what was going on. Well... Tony's still denying it.

"Well they can believe it or not. I don't really give a **** to be honest. If they think that I'm lying, then they think I'm lying. I've tried to build my career on credibility and trust, that's what we do with our players. I'm telling you — we ran a clean program. That's the way it is. That's what I say, that's what I believe. If they believe differently, that's America, they can believe anything they want to."

I'm not sure what he's hoping to accomplish by denying it now. Either he's a liar, or he's far too oblivious to what was going on in his clubhouse. According to Jose Canseco, they weren't really even trying to hide it.

It's not just LaRussa, though. It's the entire league. For years, they tried to cover up steroid use and pretend that it wasn't happening. When are they just going to admit that they knew it was happening and they knew it was good for the game at the time?
