Subjective guessing, would be my guess.

1) The best way to find out would probably be to read the article.
2) My best guess would be: defense.

Mutombo at 6 seems low to me. No Shaq or Duncan?? I like a few people on here, but Stockton & Payton??? I know they were pretty good on defense, but not the top 10 in NBA history!!! Ludacris!!!

Man Hakeem was fun to watch in his prime with his defense and "Dream Shake".  I totally see him as the number one defensive player in history.  Without looking it up, I believe he retired as the number one blocked shots guy and the center with most steals in NBA history.  He was a very good rebounder who also changed countless shots.

It's not a bad list. Cases can be made for Kidd, Garnett, Duncan, Camby, Frazier, Dumars, Cheeks, West, and so on.

Yeah, GP deserves a mention but #3? MJ was a better defender than GP, IMO.

Cherry-Picking For Rebounds Is Not Defense, It Called Cherry-Picking For Rebounds, That And Looking Ridiculous...

Listen, I'm not a fan of the Spurs. Seriously though, give credit where credit is due...you have to place Bruce Bowen in the top ten. Kobe will tell you that Bruce is one of a handful of players to make him work for his buckets. Bruce is the real "Kobe Stopper!" Bruce prevents the deuce! Doesn't give up the three for free either!

Jordan number 1 for defense? Naw. He did other great things but being top 10 for defensive player is not one of them.

Yup, he should be there. Crazy though he was, he was one hell of a defensive player.

They didn't say best player. It was for Defensive player. Jordan was better in other areas but not the best in defense.

What about "Sir Charles"? Mean defense. He deserves to be one of the top 10. I can't believe that Shaq isn't on the list. That's alright Shaq and Charles, you're on mine.
