The Minnesota Twins address their hole at shortstop Friday, acquiring J.J. Hardy from the Milwaukee Brewers. In exchange, Milwaukee received outfielder Carlos Gomez.
Hardy had a disappointing 2009 season, hitting just .229 with 11 homers and 47 RBIs in 115 games. With prospect Alcides Escobar ready to take over at the position, the Brewers had more incentive to deal Hardy.
Gomez hit .229 with three homers and 28 RBIs in 137 games this season, after a .258-7-59 season a year ago. His stolen bases also dropped from 33 in 2008 to 14 this season.
Hardy is a career .262 hitter with two 20-plus homer seasons in his resume. Gomez, acquired in the trade for Johan Santana with the New York Mets, is a .246 hitter in three major league seasons.
