Umpires are terrible in Yankees vs Angels game
The horrendous umpiring continues in full force in Game 3 of the ALCS
41
I'm not sure what it is about the umpiring in the playoffs this year, but it has been beyond awful. Tonight's game was no exception. If anything, it was even worse. Nick Swisher got picked off at 2nd base, only to be called safe, despite the ump having a perfect angle on the play. And then, a couple plays later, Swisher was called out for leaving 3rd base too early without tagging up, but replays proved that to be a bad call as well. In the end, I suppose the end result was the same, but does it really take two bad calls for the "right" result to happen?

There was also another play where Mike Napoli caught Jorge Posada in a run down, and ended up tagging both runners out near 3rd base. Not ON 3rd base, NEAR the base. Neither runners were on the bag, but one of them was called safe, somehow. And yes, it's the one in this picture, whom Napoli is clearly tagging, while he's clearly OFF the base. There is no possible justification for this call whatsoever.

And here's the earlier play, where Swisher should have been called out at 2nd:

Simply atrocious.

Just hanging out. Key word being "out", of course.

it is sad that this postseason will be remembered for bad calls instead of good baseball......

I think Tim McClelland is clearly on drugs, has alzheimers, or is on someone's payroll... Also recall that he had a prime roll in a little umpiring gem that had to do with George Brett and some pine tar...

I can an understand when an umpire gets a call wrong on a "bang, bang" play but in these instances, it isnt even close.  From the blown "foul" call in the ALDS to these calls tonight, this postseason is exhibit A in why critics argue that instant rteplay should be used for more then just home run calls.  If the goal is to get the call right, would anybody be surprised if baseball changes there instant replay policy in the near future?

The play calling tonight rivaled even my own.

Please Wordsmith... Swisher's tagging up was the most blatant make-up call I've ever seen in any sport, not even joking. The crew chief knew he could cover for his man's mistake... As blatant as it was, these terrible calls have been going both ways...

Maybe they're making up for the perception that the league is trying to get the LA-NY World Series through bad umpiring. Now they're overcompensating right before our eyes! It's a complete farce!

Is someone paying you to be this damn stupid?  They've screwed up so many calls for the Yankees. Are you watching the games or are you spending all of your time on here? Why would McClelland miss that call at third if the Yankees were paying him? You make ZERO sense as usual. Your stupidity and hatred color any kind of logic.  Please go away!

The tag up play and the steal of second base were surely human error calls, really close calls - tv cameras can make calls look bad.  I didn't get the call at third at all.  Clearly Napoli tagged out both guys at third base in what should have been a play for the ages but somebody screwed that call up big time.

Embrace the YANKEES magic.

it was obvious the swisher leaving 3rd early was a makeup call for when he wasnt called out on 2nd when they had him

I'm assuming yankeegirl is a youngster who has been abused by some Red Sox fans as of late.  She hasn't learned to act like 'she's been there before'.

Clearly, even as a Yankee fan, I saw many bad calls this year as well. I just haven't seen that many in one game in a while, with NEITHER team being greatly advantaged..

What the heck was Posada doing most of the game from his base running blunders to not knowing how many outs there are. WAKE UP POSADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And just so everyone is clear on that Napoli double play, here's photo evidence of him tagging BOTH players while it is obvious that each of them are NOT on the base. First he tags Cano, then he tags Posada. Neither of them are on the base, but Cano was called safe.

Mind blowingly terrible calls.

And just think, without those bad calls we could have had a nail-biter in the neighborhood of a 8-1 game!

WOOOOOOOOOW WAT TO SAY WAT TO SAY......AS A REDSOX FAN I AS WELL AS THE REST OF REDSOX NATION ARE USED TO HORRIFIC CALLS...BUT THIS STANDS ALMOST ALONE AS ONE OF THE WORST CALLS EVER IN BASEBALL HISTORY...THIS POST-SEASON I THINK IS ONE OF THE WORST FOR CALLS AND PLAYS IN A VERY LONG TIME...HOW IS AN UMP GOING TO SAY YOUR SAFE WHEN YOUR 3FT OFF THE BAG AND TAGGED AT THAT...CALL ONE OUT WHEN HE AS WELL IS 3FT OFF THE BAG BUT YET STILL NOT EVEN REVIEW THE PLAY ITSELF...I KNOW I KNOW THE REVIEW IS ONLY FOR HOMERUNS BUT THIS IS BECOMING A SERIOUS AND VERY AGGRIVATING SITUATION...IF THE MLB DOESN'T CHANGE ITS WAYS PEOPLE ARE GOING TO STOP WATCHING.....ENOUGH SAID.......

Way to strike a nerve there, Wordsmith. Not that I disagree...

Umpiring is a joke.  Most of those guys are out of shape and on AARP.  They should get some umps out of ump school who are eager and will get the calls right even if it means conferring with the other umps and changing the call.  I only seen 1 correct call that was a close call.  Way to go home plate ump.

I just figured they were continuing what they have been doing all season.

You didn't see the new rule?

Rule 96.2B- When a runner is 1 foot off the bag, as long as another runner is within 5 feet, the runner is "SAFE" if he is from NYY to help give higher TV ratings for the World Series.

Most people have already stopped watching.  It's the same teams in the post season every year and nobody cares about them anymore.

Nothing is better than making sure the right calls are made, no matter which team it benefits. If it's the right call, then it's the best call, no matter who it helps. If replay is the only way to ensure that we will get the right calls in situations like this, then I have no problem with it.

Where's that Northwestern robot that makes the calls for you.  I'm okay with getting rid of half of the umpires right now.  Has Joe West retired yet?  I'll start there.

I thought the playoffs were supposed to be the best of the best instead of the best of the worst. Last year wasn't the best umpiring either. Doesn't matter replay or not it is your job as an adult to correct things when they are wrong.

This is just anothr one of those lets get the Yankees into the World Series tricks.  Any other team and those plays were called right. The Yankees have a new stadium and MLB wants them to win in that stadium. I hope the Angels come back and beat the hell out of the Yankees.

And you thought NBA refs were horrible.

Seriously, who's more horrible? The NBA refs that don't call fouls on superstars so that the games are better or these MLB umps who seemingly make blundering calls that don't add any entertainment value to the game at all?
