I'm not sure what it is about the umpiring in the playoffs this year, but it has been beyond awful. Tonight's game was no exception. If anything, it was even worse. Nick Swisher got picked off at 2nd base, only to be called safe, despite the ump having a perfect angle on the play. And then, a couple plays later, Swisher was called out for leaving 3rd base too early without tagging up, but replays proved that to be a bad call as well. In the end, I suppose the end result was the same, but does it really take two bad calls for the "right" result to happen?
There was also another play where Mike Napoli caught Jorge Posada in a run down, and ended up tagging both runners out near 3rd base. Not ON 3rd base, NEAR the base. Neither runners were on the bag, but one of them was called safe, somehow. And yes, it's the one in this picture, whom Napoli is clearly tagging, while he's clearly OFF the base. There is no possible justification for this call whatsoever.
And here's the earlier play, where Swisher should have been called out at 2nd:
Simply atrocious.
