Which teams do you feel have the strongest 'most bitter' rivalry in Major League Baseball? Also, what makes your favorite rivalry so special?
What's needed to make a rivalry stand out from all the others?

My View:

THE rivalry began almost 100 years ago. Ever since, it has taken on a life of its own! It starts at the front office exec's to the players, right down to all the Boston & New York baseball fans (past to present). Unlike other rivalries, these two teams have never re-located, to, or from another city since their inception into the league. They have the same basic team uniforms that date back to before the Titanic sunk! I feel no other rivalry can match this historic Boston Red Sox - NY Yankee rivalry!

Let the games begin!
(Added in Nov/2004)
Since the Red Sox made history, as the first team to win a playoff series after being down 0-3 to the Yankees, , (which enabled them to win their first World Series in 86 years by sweeping the Cardinals), how can anyone doubt that this rivalry is the best in American pro sports . . .

red sox/yankees is number one. the fans hate each other. the rivalry carries on to other teams (see:pedro game 2 of 2009 world series). heroes turn into enemies (see:boggs, wade and damon, johnny) and the media hypes the hell out of it whenever they play, which adds more fuel to the fire. i believe this rivalry is #1 in professional american sports.

The Yankees and Red Sox are hands down the most BITTER rivalry, but the rivalry is no BETTER than the Cardinal/ Cub rivalry. Some folks at those games can actually argue and needle one another without bashing each other's nose in.

I'd agree with Guylake. I might flip 2 & 3 because as Chisoxfan said up there, Cubs and Cardinals fans are definitely antagonistic towards one another. Just ask Glenda (cubsgirl) how she feels about the Cardinals. They also have the same advantage of being in their original cities, and Cardinals fans, as a group, may be the most baseball-smart of any. Dodgers-Giants obviously carried over from New York to California but it's still intense. You can witness that banter on here between Becky (kteach) and Michael_G (the guy with the freaky clown). Jackie Robinson's career ended because the Dodgers tried to trade him to the Giants. He refused to accept the trade and retired instead. Too bad Boggs and later Damon decided to follow the money trail from Boston to NY. I'm no Sox fan but I still feel those were poor moves on their parts.

There are a few, less intense rivalries in the sport. In the NL East, there are decent rivalries between the Mets, Phillies, and Braves. (It was pretty hilarious to me when Greg Maddux was there for his number being retired before a game at Turner Field and remarked of the night's opponent, "Now let's go beat the Mets, just like the old days.") I can't think of any other really good ones in the AL. In the Central the Tigers and Indians are both original teams, but they don't seem to be big rivals. In the West... the Mariners, Rangers, Angels and Athletics are just too spread out geographically I think to engender real rivalries beyond just the normal level of divisional play; plus all but the A's are expansion teams.

Red Sox and Yankees! This rivalry has gone on so much longer than the rest! Plus it is so funny to see the fans just screaming and fighting whenever the smallest of plays happen against the other team..... And i would know too, because i'm a Yankees fan!

Phillies-Mets is a good one as well. I know the Mets fans in my wife's family absolutely despise the Phillies. Far worse than the Braves.
