In case you have no idea how World Cup qualifying works, here's a little update on how all the notable countries are doing
20
The teams that are already in:
Australia, Brazil, England, Ghana, Japan, Netherlands, North Korea, Paraguay, South Africa, South Korea, Spain.

The bottom line for the US: they need to win one more game, and they'll be in.

Teams that you would expect to be in, but are in peril of dropping out: Argentina, Portugal, France.

if the US wants to convince the masses that soccer is relevant - this would be a huge step in helping their case.

Germany not in Yet?  I need to stop using them in predictions until they make it then.  US will be in.

Germany will get in if they win on the road against Russia in their next game. But that will be tough. Russia and Germany are separated by 1 point in their group. Russia should win at home, which would vault them to first in the group ahead of Germany. So this is a big deal. One of these teams is getting in, the other is going to have to win a playoff to get in.

In Argentina, Diego Maradona is likely out as head man... but the bad thing? Argentina is in 5th place, which means they'll get to play a play off against whoever finishes in 4th place from CONCACAF. That would be either USA, Mexico, Honduras or Costa Rica. Man, I don't want to be that 4th place team from CONCACAF, because whoever it is their chances of beating Argentina are slim to none.

Actually, technically South Africa were the first to qualify from Africa. Since they are the host nation, they are the first to "qualify" for the tournament.

The way Argentina has been playing, they are far from a lock against the 4th place team in CONCACAF.

It is our prayer that Ghana will do better than, they did in the last world cup 4 years ago. For the world to know that African soccer has come of age.

MIssion complete. Top spot in the group, and an outside chance at a seed

Yep, especially if some of the Euro teams don't come through.... I think the US will get a seed.

Will the UEFA playoffs be seeded? Or is it just a blind draw, meaning we could end up seeing Portugal playing France, and automatically knocking a big name out of South Africa?

Yeah, back in September FIFA announced that they would use seeding to keep the bigger teams from playing each other. The 8 teams (Russia, Greece, Ukraine, France, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Portugal and Ireland) will be seeded according to the FIFA world rankings as of October 16th. The top four teams will be in one pot and the bottom four teams in a 2nd pot. That would mean that, for example, Russia will play either Ukraine, Ireland, Bosnia or Slovenia and wouldn't play France, Greece or Portugal.

Well, we can still hope for the upsets. Thanks for the update though, I must have skimmed over that
