Yao Ming could miss all of next season or his career could be over because of his broken foot
Oh, this is not good. Yao Ming's broken foot is worse than expected. He may miss all of next year or worse, his career may be over.
Man is this ever bad news for the Rockets, just when it looked like they were about to become one of the West's elite teams.

Yao Ming's broken foot is much worse than originally thought. He may miss all of next season and there's a possibility that his career is over.

“It sounds like he’s missing most of next season, if not the entire 82 games,” one league executive who has had recent discussions with the Houston front office told Yahoo! Sports. “That’s all that [the Rockets] will concede quietly, but they know it’s probably much worse.”

Considering Tracy McGrady is injury-riddled as well, this team is falling apart at the seams. What will they do?

From reading the article, it could have been one speculation that leads to more speculations.

See how it could happen:
The exec (let's call him Joe) happens to talk to Rockets exec, and asks: How is Yao's foot?
Rocket's exec: Can't say, still going through tests. He is seeing some specialists
Joe: what kind of specialists?
Rockets' exec: one an expert on fracture healing, one an expert on stress-related fracture, one a foot specialist for athletes. We want to cover all basis.
Joe: He had been injured a lot the last 3 years, and all big centers had problems with their feet anyway. Aren't you concern that this is a big deal, might cause him to lose many games next season?
Rocket's exec: yeah, we certainly have the concern

Then Joe talked to Adrian:
Adrian: How was your discussion with Rockets?
Joe: No progress on the trade front. But I'll tell you what, if I were them, I would be planning for Yao being out for a long time. He is visiting at least 3 specialists.
Adrian: 3 specialists? Long time?
Joe: yeah, many games, maybe most of the season
Adrian: Hmm, yeah, most really big guys had problems with their feet. This could be ongoing in his career. Walton and others had their career cut short by foot problems.
Joe: yeah, possible. They didn't say that though, but I could see them worrying about him missing much of the season.
Adrian: Yeah, reading between the line here, I say could be longer than that.

Then Adrian woke up this morning and decided to make a name for himself. He did, as I didn't know about him until today.

Hope I am right ... or it will be a pretty sad day.

Hmm. I think he will play again, but his career as an All-Star may very well be over.

Another big man with knee/ankle problems. It's amazing how Shaq has managed to stay relatively healthy with his size as long as he has.

time to build around aaron brooks and ron artest.

Yeah, if true, Rockets have to rebuild from scratch, and with few draft picks to play with.

Well, i am still optimistic that this was just sensational speculation.

This looks bad. They seemed to be so close too.  First Mutombo, now Yao. Is there a serviceable big even out there now for them to deal for?

Hope this is not true, but this could definitely be the end for him. Think about how freakishly big he is, how big those feet are and what they need to hold up. Big men often see their careers ended by what seem to be minor foot issues, but given the size of them, they become severe.

It reminds me a little of Lemieux, plagued by injury and you never really get to see them at their peak, which is a shame for us as fans and the athlete's legacy, not to mention all the "What if he had been healthy his whole career" debates.

Wow think about how important inking a long-term deal with, [I can't believe I am witing this either!] Ron Artest is now, even if Yao 'just' misses 60 games and is woefully out of basketball shape for another month, that's still means the season's a wash for him.  Looks like small-ball is in H-Town to stay!

I guess it's all on Chase Budinger.

Looks like the official word from the team is in.

Didn't clarify anything though - more like: Too early to tell, he could heal by himself, or out for the season, or out forever. Doh!

Tmac was probably saying now: See why I shut it down last season?

It's too bad.  It has always been hard for big men to stay healthy.

The trainer of the Houston Rockets must be the most overworked person in the world.

THE END OF THE MING DYNASTY........before it even started.

i'm not surprised. he's big, he was hurt, and it seemed a lot worse than everybody would admit. it stinks. even as a celtics fan, i enjoyed watching the great wall of china win like 99.9999999% of the rebounds in a game.

I'm putting my head in the sand and pretending this isn't true.

WOW. What a bombshell for Rockets fans over the world & the China Men's Basketball team. The Rocket's are looking to trade McGrady & might just have lost Yao forever. I think they need to sign & trade Artest & look into rebuilding now. Artest & McGrady could bring in some building blocks as in young players or draft picks. At least they found their PG of the future in Brooks.

lets just hope he heals well you can't make life the way u want it so i guess he has to go with life and hope for the best!

Let the rebuilding begin. Next year TMac will be off the books, maybe Yao as well, depending on his contract, I think he has the option to opt out after 09-10. Artest is asking way too much to be resigned. No reason to give up half the team this year. just sit back, maybe get a top ten pick next year and sign some of the big time FA's next year. it sucks having to sit back and watch your team struggle. The West is tough and very solid 1 - 8. Who knows, they may pull of some wicked trades this summer and surpirse me.

It doesn't surprise me that Yao broke down-such a Big man, jumping up and down on the court, playing year round basketball....it happened sooner than later....this news doesn't surprise me much....

Well it's expected since he's a really large man but missing the season next year would hurt the rockets wish it wasn't one year

It's too bad by far the best player over 7' 5".  He showed a lot of heart playing with the broken foot in the playoffs.  I really like him as a play, but hopefully he could come back.

It is most likely that Yao will go through an operation, and either miss the season, or comes back late in the season.

Timing wise:
The timing for bone healing (to 90+%) is about 6 months. He would probably get another pin or other bionic stuff, so 6 months is probably enough. Then 2-3 months of rehab and working himself back to shape. That's 8-9 months from whenever he has the surgery (say in the next 2 weeks), which will bring us to March-April 2010.

In any case, my guess is as good as yours right now.
