Yao Ming's injury is not as serious as believed, being used as a ploy for Rockets to sign Yao for less money, says Chinese official
Is Yao's injury as bad as the Rockets say it is? Or is this just a ploy by the team to lower the price of his next contract?
READ MORE:
There seem to be a lot of questions about Yao Ming's injury. Some people - like ESPN's Ric Bucher - say Yao will not miss all of next season and the injury is not career-threatening. However, the Rockets say it is.

Well, at least one Chinese official thinks the Rockets are totally full of it. He believes that the Rockets are exaggerating the injury so that when Yao's contract renewal comes up, they can sign him for less.

It's an intriguing theory, and certainly one that would benefit the Rockets. Would a sports team really go that low to save some bucks? Yes, yes it would.

Well, if there's ever one person who's worth trusting, it's a Chinese official.

I heard Bucher say that on Sportscenter this morning, and he sounded confident that Yao would definitely play in the upcoming season.  If it's a ploy by the Rockets to try and gain some leverage over potential contract negotiations, it is definitely done in poor taste and will hurt relationships not only with Yao and his agent, but with the fanbase here as well as in China.

And ESPN, too.  They're correspondents are always spot on!

For this ploy to be effective, Yao would have to participate in it.  I just don't see how that benefits him.  Besides, The Rockets' brass and Yao himself have never given any indication that they are these type of operators.

Yao is a huge man.  This type of injury is completely unpredictable and often never heals completely.  I doubt it is any type of underhanded dealing.

Tracy McGrady is the weasel in Houston, not Les Alexander, Darryl Morey or Yao Ming.

How exactly would Yao have to be in on this ploy? The Rockets simply say, Yao, we don't want to pay you as much because we think at any point your career could be over because of your foot. Yao has no role in this. It's just an easy leverage move for the Rockets.

So you believe that Yao does not know the true extent of his own injury?  He will obviously get more than one opinion.  How would it benefit the Rockets to try and mislead Yao or Sabotage their relationship with their star player.

If Yao felt under-valued or unappreciated by the Rockets he could always go somewhere else to play.

Besides, when did Ric Bucher become a medical expert?  In fact, didn't he play college SOCCER at Dartmouth?  Now he is evaluating injuries of NBA big men.  This is the same guy who said that the Jazz were tough at home due to the "VICIOUS MORMON" fans.  Real credible.

Yao is not stupid and neither are his managers.  If the Rockets try to lowball him and he's healthy, why wouldn't he just leave for another team?

It is also possible that Rockets doctors are incompetent. Remember how Tmac's injury wasn't correctly diagnosed? Tmac has a lot of detractors, but he was clearly missing a ligament, and the doctor said it was pretty normal. I am no doctors, but is it possible that our knees will work just as well when one of the ligaments is missing?

Actually the vicious fans is a fact, and if most of them are Mormons, then vicious Mormons will be the fact too.

I could see them pulling that kind of thing to keep Yao, money's tight for everybody.

However I do know one thing, whoever the trainer for the Rockets is needs to be fired. What is up with all these major injuries?

Ric Bucher is just Chris Mortenson, except he combs his hair.  Journalism to this guy is running public relations campaigns for players.  He's a joke.
