In baseball you're blasted, In NASCAR you're just trying harder
READ MORE:
I'm not a huge NASCAR fan, but I'm making a strong attempt to become a member of the massive fan base this season. Whether or not it's a good thing, all these crackdowns on cheating have helped pique my interest.

Now this can't just be an increase in cheating this year, is it? Surely there were an equal amount of drivers or more sliding past the rules last year. Is NASCAR cracking down because the sport in now under the grand stage and microscrope? If so, fantastic. Sign me up. I've always assumed the winner of each race was the one who bent the rules the most without getting caught. But perhaps that's the whole concept anyway.

What I find interesting about this whole cheating drama around Daytona (beside the fact that Waltrip used JET FUEL???) is that we crucify baseball players who cheat ... but in NASCAR it's been seen as 'just part of the deal'.

Do you embrace the "if ain't cheating, you ain't trying" theory? I think it's pretty hypocritical of sports fan to view it differently from sport to sport and Wisconsin Sports Bar admits to this:
I will be totally honest I am a two faced hypocrite when it comes to cheating in NASCAR and in other sports. Unlike the other sports I dont have a big problem with the cheating that goes on in NASCAR its part of the history of the series. Hell stock car racing grew out of booze running law breaking drivers. Cheating is in NASCAR's DNA and just like when the "revenuers" caught their grandfathers when NASCAR catches them there is hell to pay. "Dont do the crime if you cannot do the time"
What I also wonder is whether there are a greater percentage of baseball players bending the rules or NASCAR?

I have no historical reference for NASCAR, so I'm interested in your take on this.

Maybe it's in part do to the difference of opinion about cheating by modifying a car and cheating by modifying your body.

I'm sure it has a fair amount to do with it. However, when you hear fans talk about the cheating in baseball ... right near the bottom of their points are their concern for the players bodies.

The general rhetoric is there's an unfair playing field. I just wonder why it's baseball where it's most crucified.

I still haven't figured out why steroids in baseball seems like a bigger deal than other sports, when you know it's happening everywhere else too (more so in some sports)

I guess I wonder ... is cheating in baseball as much a 'part of the game' as it is in NASCAR?

The thing about NASCAR is that there is a "gray area" to these rules, that make it so hard to police the series.  Teams are always trying to push that "gray area" out just a little bit more.  Well, now that NASCAR is becoming big time, they are fighting back.  They don't anybody to be able to accuse them of favortism or allowing competitors to bend the rules.  Hopefully this clears it up a lil bit.  I don't know if that would make it a double standard or or fair/unfair.

The other thing about NASCAR is that the penalties are really more complete. In baseball, they don't take away records (73?), the closest you get is an asterisk or a fine. Any games you may have won for your team stand.

Bringing up another example, Shawn Merriman wasn't forced to live in a box for 2 months losing all the muscle he gained from 'roiding it up. That would've been more similar to what happens in NASCAR -- not only are suspensions given, but the car is taken away.

In NASCAR they'll just strip the result (almost never happens, because they catch it BEFORE the race), take the car, suspend some people, AND fine you.
