I'm not a huge NASCAR fan, but I'm making a strong attempt to become a member of the massive fan base this season. Whether or not it's a good thing, all these crackdowns on cheating have helped pique my interest. Now this can't just be an increase in cheating this year, is it? Surely there were an equal amount of drivers or more sliding past the rules last year. Is NASCAR cracking down because the sport in now under the grand stage and microscrope? If so, fantastic. Sign me up. I've always assumed the winner of each race was the one who bent the rules the most without getting caught. But perhaps that's the whole concept anyway.
What I find interesting about this whole cheating drama around Daytona (beside the fact that Waltrip used JET FUEL???) is that we crucify baseball players who cheat ... but in NASCAR it's been seen as 'just part of the deal'.
Do you embrace the "if ain't cheating, you ain't trying" theory? I think it's pretty hypocritical of sports fan to view it differently from sport to sport and Wisconsin Sports Bar admits to this:
I will be totally honest I am a two faced hypocrite when it comes to cheating in NASCAR and in other sports. Unlike the other sports I dont have a big problem with the cheating that goes on in NASCAR its part of the history of the series. Hell stock car racing grew out of booze running law breaking drivers. Cheating is in NASCAR's DNA and just like when the "revenuers" caught their grandfathers when NASCAR catches them there is hell to pay. "Dont do the crime if you cannot do the time"What I also wonder is whether there are a greater percentage of baseball players bending the rules or NASCAR?
I have no historical reference for NASCAR, so I'm interested in your take on this.
