Forgive me. Every November I get swept up in the pageantry and history of college football bowl games. I want the Rose Bowl to feature the Pac 10 vs Big Ten. I like the Holiday Bowl, and the Alamo. Couldn't do without the Sun or Peach, either (I could do without the Motor City.) Now I realize a playoff system could work with all these bowls, but I also love that each regular season Saturday is essentially life or death. Changing the system doesn't appeal to me.
It all makes sense to me in November, then March rolls around and I laugh at my silliness. Some of the best teams in the Sweet 16 would have had NO CHANCE at a title if this were the football formula.
Georgetown. Forget about it. Started Big East play 0-2. You figure 2 basketball losses equate one conference loss, and you can go an figure the Hoyas, who waited until February to play at their best (a product of their system), out of the BCS formula.
Tennessee. Ha! They wouldn't have even cracked the BCS top 12. I guarantee you Thad Matta and crew are scared ----less figuring out a way to hold the Vols under 75 points. In college football, if your start QB goes down for 2 games, both of which you lose, you're not given a second chance to prove your capability. Chris Lofton makes the Vols an entirely different team and they deserve their chance.
Kansas. Forget about it! You think the computers, and voters for that matter, would forgive a loss to Oral Roberts to start the season? Doubtful.
North Carolina. You know how much late losses effect voting. Back to back losses at Maryland and Georgia Tech would've left the Heels on the outside looking in. Same goes for UCLA and they're late stretch.
Oregon. The computers would have quacked about a weak strength of schedule.
Butler. They're your Boise State. Capable of long balling Florida out of the tournament in March Madness. In football, well they likely would have beat up Maryland leaving us asking what else they could have done.
Vandy, UNLV? They're playing around Christmas time.
So we're probably left with Ohio State vs Florida, with UCLA/UNC complaining why they were left out. And the way it's looking now, that matchup would result in Gator fans cheering, "Just Like Football!". What fun is that?
I promise next fall I'll remind myself how special it is to have 16 worthy teams, all with equal chance to win a title by being the best team at the end of year.
