Dusty Baker prefers not to 'clog the bases,' but we're big fans of covering all bases this MLB season and that's what we'll attempt every morning from now through September. We'll tweak as we go, all feedback and added contribution in the comments will get you many a thumbs up.The Joy of 1-0
Sadly, I can't share your joy, but this is the reason I love Opening Day. Half of you think your team sucks, the other half are considering the thought of your team in the playoffs. I've enjoyed some scrolling through some comments and thought about singling a few out, but that wouldn't be nice. Carpe Diem or something like that.
$11 Million Dollar Man 1-0
'Overpaid' Gil Meche stole the spotlight on day 1. His performance would have been impressive on anyone, but the fact is came against THE Boston Red Sox on national TV adds some sizzle. 7.1 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.
Oops, Lidge Did It Again
Some Opening Day duds can be overlooked. Brad Lidge blowing a save in the very first game can not. Ouch. "It's not a nightmare," Lidge said. "Honestly, the guy hit a good pitch tonight. I felt good out there and it's an unfortunate result. The reality is ... I still feel confident. So I'm not going to worry about tonight." It may have not been a nightmare, but you're career in the last 18 months is turning into one.
You suck. Boo. We want a curtain call. Yay.
This Alex Rodriguez business is going to be annoying. Note to Yankee fans: just relax. You have one of the best players of our lifetime on your team. If you cheer it, they will come.
Who Got It Done
- Edgar Renteria, ATL -- 2-for-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI. Best part is he was trying to bunt before his last one. Missed two in a row, then swung.
- Adam Dunn, CIN -- 2 mammoth HRs. One of several players getting a curtain call already.
- Ben Sheets, MIL -- CG, 2 hits, 1 ER. Left one out for Jeff Kent, otherwise spotless. Way to make a 'my arms ok' statement.
- Felix Hernandez, SEA -- 8 IP, 0 ER, 12 K He's turns 21 next week. No celebrating quite yet.
- DBacks announcer Mark Grace informed us Eric Byrnes "Plays to win."
- "I think a home run kills the rally here."
- Rockies already looking for bullpen help. That is, if you'd call Ron Villone help.
